I'm not sure why the TV show's producers/writers forced this relationship on Sheldon. It's not realistic. Based on his behaviours and desires, he'd most likely prefer the company of someone like him, someone like Amy, but a male version. I guess they're just trying to keep it clean and family friendly; still, a gay Sheldon would've made more sense.
Actually, the part that doesn't quite make sense (IMHO) is the writers forcing the relationship on to Amy. Or at least I think the writing of Amy is sort of inconsistent or that she evolved in a bit of an unrealistic way. I mean, when she first appears, there's something mentioned like her mom forces her do go out on a date once per year, implying that she doesn't really want to. Which makes no sense because although Amy has been mostly consistently uncomfortable with men other than Sheldon, she clearly has a strong libido and an attraction to men (and, also, to women, at least a hinted-at attraction to Penny) -for instance Amy has been attracted not only to Sheldon, but at one point to one of Penny's dumb beefcake male acquaintances. And at this point it seems like Amy would want someone more sexual than Sheldon, and although she's not the most hip or attractive girl, she's not outright horrible (certainly less awkward than Raj's new flame) and could easily get someone maybe not beefcake hunky, but someone with at least a sex drive and sexual attraction to her.
