I played the double bass in the 6th grade, but I wasn't that great at it.

Crap! I forgot to add a choice specifically for the people who haven't tried, thus having no idea! That means this can only apply to those that've tried.

I've never tried myself, but I figure I'd have a hard time reading the music notes because I've had trouble learning japanese letters in school.

i am a prodigious savant with perfect pitch who cannot read rythems.i play mostly by ear and have been doing so since at least 4 years of age.i play piano, clarinet, drums, gutair, flute, trumpet, baratone(with trumpet mouth peice),bells,oboe....basically anything anyone'll let me try,i am good at.i love music and want to play as many instruments as i possibly can.im getting either a violen or a cello(or both if each set of grand parents gets a diff request).im so excited! :D music is my first and most important and long lasting obsession.it is the only one that wasnt temporary.

I'm in the same situation when it comes to math. I suspect I have dyscalculia. Makes me wonder If I'd atleast have an above average skill with instruments. Is there, perhaps, a correlation between math ability and ability with instruments?

I am professonally a writer but I play french horn, trumpet and bass guitar. The brass on a symphonic level. I have sat in with the two nearest symphonies and am on call to one local Lyric opera company.
I am just learning bass guitar. On that I still sound really rather awful, although I am getting it.
I also play by ear - I've never learned to sight read due to a mathematical disability (and musical notation is MATH - let no one tell you otherwise) but I only have to hear a piece once in order to play it all the way through.
I learned trumpet and french horn fingerings visually - and have learned to relate what I hear to the sheet music by going long, longer, longest for the various notation marks, and I'm trying to adapt a similar system for bass clef, but I really learn bass patterns by having my fiancee (a professional flutist and bassist) draw me a picture of where my fingers go and then rotating that onto the fret board. Takes some concentration but it works.

And rock on, blackcat!

I think I'm pretty good at guitar. I play everyday, and I've been playing for more than three years, which is a long time for me. I just practice a lot, and till my fingers hurt.

I've mastered the guitar and violin. Just started on the saxophone.
