Hi everyone,
i'm new. Hitting 50, three kids (adolescent), marriage in shreds, newly diagnosed. I feel like I have been missing a lot of good communication (haven't read much of it yet, it is a lot). How long have you known you're autisic? I mean, when I grew up, I surely noticed I was different. So I hung around with the other "different" guys. Some got lost soon (suicide, drugs, you might know how it goes), some stayed. Split with the psychopath one last year, a good friend who taught me lots about NT functions before I knew I wasn't NT; anyway, I got tired of having to stand for his abuse of others. What next? My wife and sons are the only persons close to me I have known for less than 30 years. Two friends are still around. Anyone with experience in this area?
Glad to be with you.

I didn't figure out that I had AS until my nephew was diagnosed when I was 55.

Better late than never......
Welcome, there are people here from the whole spectrum and NTs too, some will identify more than others.
Personally I have known about Aspergers for 7 years. Self diagnosed recently after doing lots of investigation and a complete lack of help from the health care system. I'm 43 now.

I think the Internet is mainly responsible for lots of people discovering Asperger's and getting a subsequent diagnosis. Most are aware they are different, but wouldn't have had the means to quickly do a little research before the Internet.

to answer your question, I knew I was different  from an early age but I couldn't put a precise finger on it [other than vague awareness that I was a dimbulb oddball] until I got dx'ed in my early 40s.

sorry but I am a newbie as to relating to others successfully [or in my case, semi-demi successfully  ]. I have been a hermit all my life, but hiding in plain sight.

Hey there and welcome. )

I am forty something. I have always been "off" or different than other people I have discovered most of my life. I have been researching the problem since I was 30 something and found I do fit the criteria of a woman with Asperger’s in my 40s. I think this is a common experience of people within our age ranges as autism was not well known when we were younger. I have known I am learning disabled since very young however.

There are some "old timer" threads which suggest this as a common experience of 30 - 70 year olds finding out later due to research.
