Meh. I think she's wrong. I think it really is the result of greater awareness. There might be a small-ish rise in the actual cases, but not much.

I was one of those kids that the said didn't exist, the ones who got labeled with other disorders.

Sounds to me like she chose to believe the wrong "Really Big Lie".

What the heck?

Quote:
Right now, eighty percent of autistic Americans are under the age of 18. This is another thing nobody seems to think about. What happens when one out of every 166 eighteen-year-olds goes on disability for life with autism?

Years ago, I used to hear projections about the enormous cost to society when the baby boomer generation retired. I don't hear anything about the generation with autism. They won't have pension plans, IRA's, veteran's benefits, or home equity. They will never pay into Social Security, but they will need to live on disability payments for life.

OK, NOW they are saying ALL people with autism aren't productive members of society? There out to be a law so that people like me and dan akroyd, etc... DON'T have to pay taxes, etc...! In MY case they keep saying I DON'T EXIST! OH, I exist to be pursued for jury duty, junk mail, taxes, etc... I even had to register for the DRAFT! When it comes to jobs, and being a credit to some class I am in, FORGET IT! STEVE DOESN'T EXIST!! !!

BTW I DO have a nice job, but they now facilitate importing people to take jobs from Americans, and lower American wages because Americans(like myself), supposedly DON'T EXIST! That is the official Government LIE!

Frankly, the article indicates a SUSPICIOUS timeframe! It just HAPPENS to be when Autism was REDEFINED! Prior to that I, and dan akroyd I'm sure, would NOT have been considered autistic. Most on this board, including Alex, wouldn't have been! Isn't that more likely than some tie that doesn't even make any sense?

"Right now, eighty percent of autistic Americans are under the age of 18."

That would be more accurate, I suspect, if it read "eighty percent of DIAGNOSED Autistic Americans are under eighteen"

You are RIGHT about THAT, BUT..... A lot of the symptoms of true autism won't really appear until like 2(Actually specified as the point where AS and HFA can be seperated), and you probably shouldn't overreact, so lets make it 3(18-3=15)

2007-(0-15)=1992-2007

Can it be more than a coincidence that 1992 is SO close to 1994 which just HAPPENS to be PRECISELY when Autism was REDEFINED?????

When John was fifteen, everything changed. I found a doctor who specialized in developmental disorders. I wanted to learn how to get John to interact more with people.

Did anyone ask John if he wants to interact more with people?

What did he say would happen if she continued?

My kidneys would have been destroyed, and I would have DIED!

Is it true, that before 1994, one had to have an assessed IQ in the MR range in order to receive a diagnosis of autism?

I also think this is another example of looking at how things are NOW and applying that logic and knowledge on the past. Often on curebie parent forums you will see this - usually there will be one thread about the epidemic of autism and how no one could have not noticed these kids before and another thread about how someone can not get their kid labeled with an ASD because of lack of knowledge about the spectrum. For some reason you can have the SAME people agreeing with both these statements and some even using the lack of awareness as "proof" that the epidemic of autism is even larger. What they don't understand is if they can not get kids labeled NOW with a much wider spectrum and criteria and awareness, then it would make sense that in the past people on the spectrum would have been mislabeled or perhaps not even labeled at all.

Scroll down in this forum to the thread about what would they have called autism in ancient times. Fascinating stuff. We've always had autistic individuals, but they were no doubt mis-labelled, with the result of being locked away in institutions, or the attic.

It's terribly sad, but back when I was a child it wasn't uncommon at all to hear about some family that had an 'odd' member put away. Think of being autistic, and locked away with schizophrenics for the rest of your life ...

For each odd family member institutionalized before autism was categorized, there were probably many more who were not "put away".

I've heard of a few strange blosoms on my family tree who were simply regarded as nutty, excentric or reactionary in ways that have given me added insight in to the heredatary nature of this condition.

When my Grandmother's Aunt was alive, there was no autistic label, but many of her characteristics could be strong indicators of her being on the spectrum.
