How should Autistics be treated by Support Providers?
I want to ask a general question.
Do you guys feel like equals of the people who are therapists, psychologists, voc rehab specialists, and psychiatrists? And not just them, but of anyone who works in a way to support people on the spectrum.
The reason I ask is because I’m trying to discover the attitude that someone who tries to help people on the spectrum should have.
I’m not that severe. And, I know that sometimes people who are not that severe think of themselves as somehow….. than people who are more severe. Even the term high functioning implies that.
The practical side of this is I’m trying to get into a position that supports people on the spectrum. And, since I’m not that severe I could easily say that I don’t need to utilize the supports that the work I plan to do provides. But on the other hand, I am going to be the person trying to convince others on the spectrum to utilize the supports I provide.
Do you see what I’ve been thinking about? The question is: What is the right attitude for someone who is trying to provide support for people on the spectrum?
My answer so far has been…humility, that I should always treat anyone on the spectrum I encounter as an equal.
What do you guys think of this?

I'd like to take this chance to thank you in advance for wanting to help out other individuals on the spectrum.
As I've long said, people are people, Aspie, NT, Valyarian, we're all people, and we all deserve respect.
Along those lines, I think you're on the right track with your above post.

I agree. Be aware of thier challanges and do what you can to help them and. Most importantly LISTEN to them wether they speak with words, apps, pecs, sign language or through behavior! Believe them if they tell you something hurts them even if it wouldn't hurt you ect.
Be willing to meet them where they are and don't be afraid to use visuals and thing they enjoy to help them understand
