I've read that you can only have $2,000 in your bank account, but I live with my parents right now. I'm 29 and would like to live on my own. I have found apartments that have plenty of things I can walk to (grocery, ect.) because I can not drive. Can I still rent an apartment? Is it ok to cash checks and save it so that I have enough money to move out?

The best way to save some money on SSI is to cash the check and save it that way. The amount that can be saved up in a bank account varies with each state, I think mine can't go anywhere near that (maybe $800) before they make a claim on it.

I normally don't have any left to save, personally, with bills and rent and whatnot (I rent a room with internet included right now).
