How do I resolve this situation with these computers?

So, I have a total of two desktops currently. Except one, which was cutting edge last year, I never used... because it already has an HD installed with Windows 7 on it (which I don't have a desire to use) and when I put in my current HD it just wouldn't accept all the hardware (I'm not sure if this is a software or hardware issue).

So... I'd like to use my other computer's more advanced resources but I can't because I'm unable to easily transfer my current setup there. And it's a pity, all that money spent on it to go unused...

I don't think it's possible to give any meaningful answer without more information.
You haven't even told us what operating system is on your old hard drive.

Whatever I'd suggest you consider starting a fresh, and just having your old drive as a second hard drive so that you can copy over stuff you need.

Moving an installed operating system on to new hardware is often not straightforward.

What OS are you running on your current system? If it is some flavor of Linux, the most current distributions should be able to see the new hardware.

As for your applications, I would back your data up to a flash drive, the copy them to the new system once you have installed the OS to the newer system.

Back in the win98 and earlier days. You could just move a HD with the OS installed to a newer computer and it just would update the driver database. as of NT/XP because of the kernel. You can't do that anymore. When you install NT or higher OS on your computer. The installer analyses and builds the base kernel and install kernel modules that are specific to your computers hardware and because of this. You can no longer just move an installed OS to another machine.

Back up the information that you want to keep from the computer that you don't want to use anymore, then pull the drive and stick it in the computer that you want to use. After that is done, install the OS of your choice on the newer computer, and transfer the files that you have backed up onto the new computer.

I assume that because of the fact that you don't like Win7, you use something else. If it's an MS product, such as WinXP, you will need an install disc that you can find easily and cheaply enough on eBay. If it's a Linux Distro, before you do the above, download an ISO image of your distro of choice, then transfer it to a USB key with a program such as this one
