By all means if you feel ready to accept a diagnosis then get yourself diagnosed if you can.
You are unlikely to be diagnosed with Asperger's now though, as since the new DSM came out, those diagnosed are classified as having Autism - either high functioning or otherwise.
So if you like the label of Asperger's you'll be disappointed, but if you want to accept a diagnosis and HF Asperger's is correct you may be diagnosed with that.
There is a vast difference between accepting a self diagnosis and being formally diagnosed, and once the Jeanie is out of the bottle you can't put it back.
You also have to be mindful that not all psychologists or psychiatrists are qualified to diagnose ASD, so if you are looking for a diagnosis, you will have to do some more research to find the right diagnostician.
Since you are in the UK, you should be able to find someone suitable linked to Dr Simon Baron Cohen (yes Borat's brother).
See the link for details http://www.autismresearchcentre.com/clinics.
By all means add your story, everyone has a story to tell, and it's good to share.

If you have Asperger's, you will very likely still be diagnosed with AS (not ASD) in the UK. They more commonly use the ICD rather than the DSM criteria, and ICD will only change in 2015, if at all. For more information, see the site of the National Autistic Society:

http://www.autism.org.uk/About-autism/A ... teria.aspx

Quote: "The DSM is one of the two main international sets of diagnostic criteria for autism. It is influential, but it is not the main set used in the UK."
