Massively over-rated games
Are there any games which it seems like the whle world is hooting and tooting about, except that when you actually play them they seem somewhat less enjoyable than expected ?
Any games, which you had expected to enjoy... but when it comes down to it, you have realised that it's not worth squandering your limited mortal time on this planet by slogging through them ?
For me, it would be 'Zelda - Ocarina of Time'.
I should have known better than to buy this for the 3DS, really.
I never enjoyed it much when I was younger, and couldn't even figure out how to get through that annoying big tree at the start.
The game was just stunningly frustrating.
I guess I felt as though I should give it another chance, and thought it might be less of a pain in the backside to play in portable format.
But aieee.... I was so wrong.
I really don't like this game at all.
It sucks from all manner of angles, and honestly I have so many other games which I would rather play.
I haven't played it anything like as much as this following reviewer (I played up until the Fairy Queen on Death Summit) , however I do agree with the points which he has been making (to the extent that I have experienced what he's talking about) -

I will add to these criticisms by saying, that the 3D effect in the 3DS version is also absolutely f*cking terrible.
It's not very stable - and as such, it stutters and farts all over the place.
I find it hellish on the eyes to play it in 3D for any length of time.
And so it has come to pass, that after giving it another decent chance to redeem itself... I find myself annoyed by the experience more than anything else, and shall soon be listing it on Ebay, before I feel tempted to play any more of this poxy game.
All respect for those who do enjoy this game, but for me I give it ten farts (out of ten) on the crap-o-meter.
I rather liked Chrono Trigger, but certainly agree that it appears to be somewhat over-praised by some of the people who enjoy it.
I played it really far into the game, but eventually gave up at this one incredibly lame lift section where you have to fight like, a zillion waves of incredibly generic and tedious runt enemies in formations of 4, while trapped in a lift that seems to never get where it's going.
As you say, it's not a bad game... but I do feel that it seems far less outstanding than people led me to believe when I decided to start playing it.
It's a derivative Squaresoft J-RPG... fine as far as that goes, but it's no more than that.
The last 4 Zelda games ( Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks & Skyward Sword )
the Call of Duty series
99% of sports games
Gran Turismo
most GTA games ( I like them, but only really enjoyed Vice City )
God of War series
every MMORPG
Assassin's Creed: Revelations
Assassin's Creed III
Dead Space 3
DKCR ( too damn hard...and eff whoever though it was a good design idea to put DK's roll move on motion controls )
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion ( actually, every ES game but Skyrim )
Angry Birds series
Battlefield series
Far Cry 2
Fable series
F.E.A.R. 3
Any of Nintendo's casual crap ( Nintendogs, Steel Diver, 100 Classic Books, Personal Trainer, etc )
Sonic Chronicles

I'm a big FPS fan. I go all the way back to Wolfenstein, Doom, Hexen, Quake, Blood, etc.
My favourite game turned out to be Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas.
After that, I found linear or "corridor" games to be a little restrictive, predictable and boring.
Lately, I've been playing Dishonored, Medal Of Honor Warfighter, BioShock Infinite and Metro Last Light, but without that open world/sandbox feel, they're just meh.

Halo. That is all. Ok, I could probably list most mainstream titles, since I rarely have the same love for them as the majority of people out there. I actually don't even hate Halo. I just find it to be a mediocre fps series that is everything I dislike about the genre at this point. It certainly isn't the second coming of Christ in videogame form, and I will never sell my soul to MS.
I also didn't care much for the first Assassin's Creed. I hear the series improved since then, but it can't have gotten worse, and my rule is, if I don't like one entry in a series, I don't bother with the rest. I will admit that ACIV looks interesting, and I was almost willing to make an exception till the fiasco with the E3 demo. I don't care for glitchy multiplats, and if the demo froze up, I can't trust that the final product will be better.
Good point.... Halo definitely gets my vote.
Specifically, Halo : CE anniversary.
I realise that it's a remake of an ancient game and all, but my god... I just thought it was totally mediocre.
The pretty graphics certainly were an enhancement compared to the hideously barren poo-stained environments of the original (you can switch back and forth in-game, to compare the two) ... but something about the glittery new polish having been slapped straight on top of such a creaky old out-dated game just seemed to emphasise how crappy the original 'Halo' was, for me.
Gears of War
Those games bring Michael Bay sensibilities into the world of video games. Complete with his brand of incredibly stupid "comic relief". Marcus Fenix is probably the most boring and generic action video game hero I have encountered on the 360. I also should mention all of the times I got killed because of the auto-cover system trapping me to walls and rubble when I really needed to get my guy moving. And it can be a real chore to find decent legit games thanks to all of the boosting activity that the "Seriously" achievements encourage (and naturally, a lot of these people leave negative feedback to people who just want to play for real).
I also was vastly disappointed in L.A. Noire - but that's because it's damn near impossible for me to read social cues and facial expressions to begin with.
- The first Assassin's Creed (Crappy gameplay does not a good game make.)
- GTA IV (most of the characters in the game are boring as hell - In stark contrast to Vice City and San Andreas)
- Crysis series (Too much eye candy, too little gameplay.)
- Dragon Age: Origins (The concept was excellent, but the gameplay was *abysmal*)
- BioShock series- (I actually think that these games are good. But they just don't belong in the top tier. It can complain and scream all it wants, but it's just another FPS).
Wow, someone else that doesnt like Ocarina much! That is.... rare.
I definitely consider that one to be hugely overrated. I played through it as a kid, but wouldnt want to do so a second time. Never had any desire to go back to it whatsoever. Bloody boring game. Hell, the main Hyrule Field or whatever it's called is proof of it; it's so bloody blank and boring that the game craps out random skeletons at you at night just to keep you from falling asleep during the slooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwww dull treks across it.
Other than that, theres:
Basically everything Nintendo has done since the Gamecube era. I really, REALLY dont like them. Metroid is the worst of the group for me by far. Which is sad, because I looooved the old 2D Metroid games.
Every modern FPS: I love old "corridor" ones like Doom and whatnot; they're fast and exciting! I HAAAAAATE the modern ones with their obsessions with "cover", hiding, sniping, and dull things like that. They're slow and boring. The extreme obsession with "realism" doesnt help either.
GTA and it's clones, and every single thing made by Rockstar in particular: Ugh. Ya know, typically I have no problem with violence and such in games.... but Rockstar in particular seems to have this idea that if it isnt "controversial zomg" it cant possibly sell very well. There are LOTS of games, including many timeless classics, that prove that you dont NEED any of that to make a good one... but that developer goes so overboard with it that the "controversy" almost IS the entire point. And I've tried these games, too... when I look past all of the controversial crap and the violence and the *cough* edginess *cough*, the actual GAMEPLAY (aka, the important part) I found to be quite stale and uninteresting, with controls that usually just irritated me. Stuff like Saints Row is just as bad.
Every RPG made by Square: Just..... aaaaaaaaaaagh. If you've ever heard of Spoony, his various series on Final Fantasy are the best possible explanation as to just why I hate Square and their games. Just... argh. So..... awful..... story too stupid.... cannot compute.... and the worst part of it is that Square is one of those "too damn big" ones, that ends up influencing the entire damn genre with their crap. As such, I dont play JRPGs whatsoever. They end up ALL seeming that way lately.
I could go on, and on, and on, and on, and on about this, but I'll stop there for now as I've other stuff I need to do here.

I don't think some of the hate they are getting here rather than the game not matching personal taste., or keeping old grudges.
As for myself, I might put the Dead Rising games, I like taking out zombies, but my preference that I have had problems with the games. I just think that they time limit thing and the generally unfair bosses with the difficult to use controls makes the games not as good as people say. Probably also some part that I don't like the repetition thing of being encouraged and unable to succeed the first time. Although maybe I am just looking at it wrong and I might decide to play it again.
Black Ops was not that great, the story was pretty obvious, the weapons not that fun, and the whole zombie thing is not really fun past the novelty. Nothing really game changing.
Far Cry 2, the game had the same old missions of go out and shoot something. It was supposedly open world, but driving around in boring narrow roads, having to fight against the same enemies in frustrating ways, with an awful map, suffering malaria, is not my idea of fun. It is why I held off from buying the third game, I just got pretty frustated/bored.

Spoony himself like the old Final fantasy games, you should not judge the whole franchise on the recent games while the franchise undergo a spectacular decline. Maybe you should try Final Fantasy VI, which is compelling from beginning to end. Also, Ninokuni is very different from recent Final Fantasy.
