Let's face it, women, you either love to have your hair up, or down. Let's ask it here.
----
As a man, I like it when a woman's hair is down, it really accentuates her face. Plus, it looks so beautiful! Be still, my beating heart.....

I'm at a loss for which to choose, because I actually have a horribly complicated relationship with this issue!

Out in public: Down
At home: Up

Or also:
For aesthetic purposes: Down
For physical comfort: Up

I have medium-long hair because I think it does indeed frame my face to its best advantage, and I look MUCH better with it down than up. It's like night and day, or a trick of the light, or Dorian Grey's painting! I can pass for attractive/pretty with it down, but put it up and suddenly my face looks plain.

I'm suddenly reminded of that Seinfeld episode with the girlfriend whose looks changed completely from ugly to attractive depending on the light!

But the paradoxical thing is, I hate wearing it down because of sensory issues. I can't tolerate the feeling of my hair rubbing the back of my neck, or against the skin of my back and shoulders if I'm wearing a summer top, for very long.

So, if I'm out and about in the world I keep my hair down because I look horrible with it up (ten years older and rather plain).

But the very minute I get home and can shut the door on the world, up it goes! I want it off my back and out of the way. Sometimes it's been driving me so crazy that it's the first thing I do and I'm kind of going "URRURGHGHH" in a rush to grab a bear-claw clip and get my hair off me. I hate the look but I prefer the physical feeling of it up.

Down; I am lazy. Plus it never stays properly up anyway.

I do a quick thing that's stays put mostly -- lean over so it all falls downward, grab it up, twist it around itself until it folds tightly to your head in a spiral, then grab one of those "bear claw" hair clips and grab the "bun" of hair in it's grasp. Holds really tightly!

You can do it messy which only takes a few seconds, or do it to look actually quite neat by a lot of brushing and more careful twisting so it stays looking nice. and grip it at the back with smaller clips.

I prefer it up. It's really untidy and frizzy when it's down. The only time I can have it down is when it's straightened.

I go either way, depending on the season. During the summer, I keep my hair up to keep cool and to keep my hair neat. During cooler months, I keep my hair down while wearing a headband.

Great post,
appreciate the analysis you did of the purposes for each set of circumstances & the reasoning behind them.
Makes complete sense to me.
My hair is always tickling me, which drives me nuts,
but it stays more out of my way when I curl it, so that's what I do (plus, it looks much prettier when I make it curly than when I let it lay flat/straight).
Hair scrunchies are one of my most handy tools :)

I hate to have hair in my face or in the way in any form. I usually braid it (two braids, Pippi Longstocking style! ), or use one of those elastic bands that go near the hairline in the front and around the head under the hair, when I have it loose/down. Also, my hair is pretty wild, it has a will of it's own and I just don't have any intrest in spending an hour every day styling it and using products. I prefer to brush, braid/pony, and go.

In my personal opinion, having hair away from the face and neck looks better in most people, the jaw-line/neck/ears/collarbones are quite sexxy to look at, and I hate it when people hide their eyes.
It's like a bad comb-over for the face.

I much prefer not having to put up my hair at all, but when it gets long and I get too lazy or poor to go to the hairdressers, I tie it up. I don't want it in the way all the time.

This. It looks pretty down, but I have a toddler, so I keep my hair up most of the time. She loves to pull on it and tangle it, plus it's hard to chase after her with my hair falling in my face and blinding me. So yeah. If I'm in the mood to feel pretty, I'll wear it down. If not, I braid it and/or put it up.

I do the same or else my kids pull at my hair when i'm carrying them. I wear my hair up so much that when it's down it seems strange but I will wear it down if I have to go to a meal or something that I have to dress up for.

This!

The poll question appears to assume long hair, which many women don't chose at all.

Personally, I don't particularly care what someone else thinks is aesthetically pleasing because I don't exist to entertain them. I have more important things to do with my life than give someone else something to stare at and rate either approvingly or disdainfully (objectification comes across as creepy and arrogant either way). Though as it happens, people seem to really like my current pixie-hawk. I change my hair all the time but always according to my own preferences.

My hair is shoulder length, layered a bit, and usually down, unless it's really hot and then I can't bear it on my neck.

I cut it myself as I can't cope with the hairdressers - all that chat about going out or going on holiday, the smell of the products, the mirrors everywhere! Aargh!! So finally, a couple of years ago, I started cutting it myself and regardless of what it looks like, it feels great to just spend 10-15 minutes at home doing it myself. No-one has commented that it looks odd yet so I think I'm getting away with it.

My hair is always down, but it's also short and just long enough to be pulled back. Not sure if it counts. I cut it short because I like being able to have it down without feeling like I'm wearing a rug.

Agreed....I keep mine in a pixie because of perpetual hot flashes! :bom:

When I let it grow out, I keep it up a lot of the time. I have to have it up at work, and the rest of the time it just seems to get in the way. Every 5 years or so, I will get this idea that I want to let it grow out. It gets to between my shoulders and my waist and I wake up one day with an intense hatred for it and go cut it off. I keep it in a pixie most of the time because it is easy, saves on shampoo, and is very low maintenance. I don't like spending very much time on my hair.
