Is it just me, or does it seem kind of ignorant and offensive how people pronounce asperger's?
Let me kind of explain what I mean. Especially amongst the newer generation of people, kids and teens, but surprisingly specialists seem to say it one way in particular.

ASS-PERGERS

To me, it seems this is COMPLETELY WRONG. How difficult is it to pronounce it

A-SPERGERS

I mean, even the man who defined autism in the latest dsm-IV, Dr. Fred Volkmar, says it the first way I showed. It almost feels as if people are trying to make us feel bad for what we have. Maybe Im looking too far into this but Id really like to hear what you all think.

The word 'ass' doesn't strike that in me. As a matter of fact, I pronounce it that way. Of course, I've never met many that say the word at all. Perhaps it just grinds on you after a time.

Wait, are you saying that the correct way to pronounce it is aSPERgers?

I dont know if it is or not, it just seems more appropriate or correct. Not too mention, if you were to tell people you had ASS PERGERS syndrome, they'd use that alone against you. If you say, A spergers, its less likely they would put 2 and 2 together.

In English it always seem to be pronounced 'ASSPERGers' while I think that correct German pronounciation can sound like either 'uhsPEARGers', or 'uhsPEARJers'.

I think putting the accent on the second syllable makes it sounds unnatural and embarassed. Like Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein. For me, just the fact that it's called aspergers adds a touch of dark humour.

Heh. As long as we can laugh with ourselves instead of at, that's all that matters. I can see how one could only hear the "ass" syllable, but it's not the first thing that comes to my mind when I say it.

I pronounce it similarly to Isbergers (not a real word), and not Assberjers.

When I first got diagnosed with AS, I had issues with the word Asperger's. I kept seeing hamburgers with asses in my mind and for days muttered the word to myself over and over. When I tried to force myself to stop, it would come out loud. Thank goodness I wasn't in public any where when I yelled out "Ass-burgers".

So when I read your post, I got curious and looked it up. Here's what Miriam-Webster says:

Main Entry: As·per·ger's syndrome
Pronunciation: 'äs-"p&r-g&rz-
Function: noun

For the ä sound, it's the sound that you make when the doctor wants to see your throat.

I wish my doctor would have first said it to me in that manner. I don't think I would have had such a time with it if she would have said it that way. I wonder if Hans' knew Aspies would have trouble with his name..Asperger. For the sake of Aspies, why couldn't he have changed his last name to something like Smith...lol? I'm kidding.

Oh my...yeah, asperger's syndrome is much better. I sure don't want to tell anyone I have AS but to tell them I have a condition called “autistic psychopathy”....no way.

I have always pronounced it the same way as the latin verb "sprinkle"

Some of my friends know I have AS, and like me more because of my differences. I'm sure we'd laugh together when I tell them this!

Wow, I have autistic psychopathy! *dances*
