So my girlfriend just sent me a text explaining to me how she's so happy that I respect her culture by not trying to rush things physically in the relationship. She was nervous about dating a Westerner like me because she was afraid she'd have to get intimate before she was ready. She says that I'm "gentle for her" and this is makes her "happy to stay with her".

That I'm a "goodboy" instead of a "playboy" despite the fact that I'm "handsome" apparently makes me stand out. Her and her Laotian friends were joking about how I'm going to make a "great husband". They did so in a suitably humorous fashion (it would have raised a red flag otherwise) but the clear implication is "So far you seem like a keeper".

This is just the kind of thing I need to scrub all that cynicism outta my system.

What's the betting he'll be on here in four years' time, after he's been married to her for several years and he says they still don't have sex.

This sort of thing rarely gets better and I am concerned you're setting yourself up for a very sexless, frustrating marriage OP.

Still, if you love her, it ain't my business.

She's not a virgin, you know. It's not that she's a puritan.

Yes, the cynicism will be a good thing to put to bed. Mainly because it's the thing that could lead you to making wrong presumptions about her that could potentially self sabotage the relationship.

Laos is a communist country from buddith background - I don't think they are generally that reserved.

Check rule number 3.

Quote:
3. Public displays of affection are not practiced by Lao, even holding hands with your loved one (you will see friends of the same sex). Being affectionate in public makes most Lao uncomfortable so, best to do in private.

PDA and sexual abstinence are two different things.
