you've left it a bit late haven't you?
Hang on to your money and put it towards a PS4.

maybe some of us still want to play PS3 games? PS4 won't be backwards compatible, and not everybody wants the launch games you know ( I want both PS4 & Xbox One eventually...but only after a decent amount of games I give a crap about are available *cough* Kingdom Hearts III *cough* ). Hell, I still need my own PS3 so I can finally get to the PS+ games I've accumulated over the past year ( only have access to my sister's 40 gig, and it would have to be almost empty just for Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One... )

I eventually want XBOX One and PS4, but I've decided to wait 2-5 years before I get them. Titanfall, Destiny, Watch Dogs, The Order: 1886 and Kingdom Hearts III are really the only games that catch my eye.

While the servers for some games will have been shut down by now, many are still very active.
A lot of good PS3 games will also be very cheap by now, having been around for a while already.
Not everybody is keen to rush into buying the hottest new thing, while choosing to stump up £55 for each game they play.
And to answer the original question, I prefer my Xbox 360 to my PS3 ... but the PS3 has some excellent unique games, which is why I got it.
You couldn't have said this later , I'm sorry but with the 8th Genration zooming in " PS3 Vs Xbox 360 " topics are just obsolete.
But to further satisfy Your curiosity , here is my explaination.
Graphics wise they are both incredibly similar , not much difference only darker contrast on the PS3.
Meanwhile PS3 games can hold more data , since it's a Blu-Ray format , this was evidently shown last month when GTA V came out , because the DVD could not simply handle the massive amount of data , the Xbox 360 version needed 2 discs to play the game , one for installing and one for actually playing it.
The PS3 needed just one Blu-Ray disc.
One thing the PS3 has as a major advantage over the Xbox 360 , is that failure rates are much more unlikely to occur , I bought a PS3 in 2008 and it only got the YLOD May last year , and that was only because I didn't dust it or look after it properly.
Most of my friends have an Xbox 360 , and it breaks down after only 2 years and they have to get another one.
The PS3 was released one year after the Xbox 360 so Technogly had slightly improved to allow more processing power in the console.
Meanwhile another advantage the PS3 has over the Xbox 360 is that to play online games dosen't require You to pay any money , while on Xbox 360 You must sign up to a membership and pay monthly.
So I conclude that overall , the PS3 is the most advanced You can get in the 7th Gen collection of consoles.
To be honest though , I would just to some more research , decide for Yourself whats better , and if You're thinking of getting one , I would honestly just get what most of Your friends have , that is if Your an online type of guy.

What does failure rate mean? Does that having something to do with consoles giving out and dying?

Yep.
The 360 in particular is famous for it. The Red Ring of Death. It usually signifies that the console is dead; the usual solution to this seems to usually be replacement. 360s often do not last very long. Terribly shoddy things, really.
PS3s last longer, but can still give out after a time.
As opposed to many older consoles, which just seem to never fail at all in many cases.
Now as for which one I prefer..... feh. Neither. Hate them both. I have a JP 360, which exists to run import shmups, and the PS3... I dunno why the heck it's even still here. I probably should sell it, but that wont accomplish much of anything and requires effort.

It's entirely a matter of luck which determines how long consoles will last for... well, that and how well they are treated (or not).
My Xbox 360 is a little over 4 years old, and is a total workhorse.
It works perfectly well.
It minor-RRODed once, but I think that was purely because it was used so much that it was completely clogged with dust, and overheated because of it.
After hoovering it a little bit through the holes in the case, it's been perfectly okay ever since (that was about a year ago).
If the OP doesn't want to piss a whole lot of money away on a fancy new PS4 and £55 a pop games, then I don't really see why people seem to think that's any sort of an issue.
One positive thing about the PS3 is that since it uses blu-ray discs and those discs are more scratch resistant than your typical DVDs, buying preowned PS3 games could be viewed more of a safer bet than DVD based games.
And to the other PS3 fans, I cannot believe you neglected to state that the PS3 can use the 2.5" notebook hard drives and in that fashion, having one or two TB drives would be possible with the PS3.

I still have my 1st gen PS3 with hardware emulation that I bought 1 month after it was released. Still runs great. It came with a 20gb HD, which I have since upgraded to a 120gb drive. Only one quirk is that I have to have it on its side. If I stand it up, it overheats. Sony had a cooling stand for putting the ps3 upright, but I found for space considerations, it was easier to put it on its side anyway.
I have a 360. I had a couple of bad experiences with losing money on paid DLC that customer service couldn't seem to recover from the void, as well as the console chiseling my game discs to death a couple of times. I also have two controllers that are completely broken, because they are cheaply made pieces of crap. The thing won't play original xbox games without the additional purchase of an official 360 slim hard drive. Even with the hard drive, there are some games that Microsoft never got around to patching, Sudeki for one. I couldn't say anything about PS3, because I have never owned nor played on one.
I have found mine to be quite robust.
I have never broken an Xbox 360 controller so far, and the official kind seem to be quite well made.
The standard fat-ass Xbox 360 can play a variety of original Xbox games.
Some of them require a small automatic update to patch them, though.... for example, Fable.
And as with the PS3, some previous-gen games are not emulated - or are only emulated with a limited degree of success.
AFAIK all Xbox 360s use the same kind of hard-drive, unless otherwise modded.

To clarify, the controllers are the ones that came with the console ... it doesn't get more official than that. They turn off after a few minutes of play, due to wobbly battery covers, and the buttons have become noticeably less responsive with time and use. As for all Xbox 360s having the same hard drive, I know from experience that this is simply not true, and we never modded anything. My original, white 360 came with an internal hard drive. It broke. I bought a black 360 slim, only to find that it did not come with a hard drive. The white one's hard drive will not fit in the black one, no way. We were forced to choose between purchasing a new hard drive or living without one, which is fine as long as you don't want to install games or play original Xbox games. I don't know where you got the idea that you could put just any hard drive into the current-gen 360 console, but I would not recommend trying that!
