And updated my status:

"How to make your little autistic happy:

1) Don't disrupt their routine, no matter how ridiculous it seems to you.

2) Do not force them to socialise, especially when a frown seems to be permanently glued to their face.

3) Don't expect them to switch from one task to another; autistic people can not transition from change easily. Essentially, it gives them panic attacks. And this is the tiniest bit of change.

4) Do not ask for their attention when engaged in a special interest. It's a bit like getting into a steel cage with a wolverine.

5) Don't make it seem like social rules are obvious - they don't f-----g know. You'll be lucky if they can read body language or make eye contact.

6) Understand that autism is for the most part a social communication disorder and they can not explain their feelings well.

7) Understand they need order and have sensory processing difficulties and can be under distress in what they deem as 'chaotic environments.'

8 ) Respect their dislike of close contact.

9) Let them use autism as a f----g label. If it helps them have some goddamn confidence about themselves and reduces social anxiety, then that can only be a good thing. F--k the fake NT social world and it's mundane conversation topics.

10) Understand that they use logic over emotions to communicate and can be distressed by over emotional people.

11) Get it through your thick skull that autism is caused by a structural difference in the brain and cannot be trained out, unless your autistic is a 3 year old and having intensive ABA therapy. A 27 year old is not going to overcome their autistic symptoms anytime soon. And why would they? It can also make them brilliant.

12) Don't pity them; they are probably much smarter than you anyway."

Sorry for the swears. I'm pretty angry tonight. And the label part is why I use the label sometimes. I have a social phobia.
I know I could have gone into more detail of #11 but er, I didn't want it becoming too complex. NTs on Facebook, you know. Short attention span.

Sorry. I'm being offensive tonight. And arrogant. My mania is making me pretty gosh darn arrogant.
Well, I'm a sick person and I think I just completely broke tonight.

Thanks for sharing this. May I also add, if your child says something, of which you don't understand the logic behind, don't belittle them and make them feel stupid for it.

I love the part about interfering with special interests is like getting into a steel cage with a wolverine.

So true.

I wish I could just say to people, "Don't. Bother. Me. WHEN I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF MY CURRENT OBSESSION." (Door slam. Lock.)

Instead of what I actually do, "Oh uhm, excuse me I'm going to go in my room and.. Lie down. Yeah. Lie down."

It’s actually a very nice list. I know I can relate to most of it and would love it if others around me understood it.

Excellent list. Even before I learned of Aspergers, I would say every single one applies to me. Explains my feelings nearly perfectly!

You know, if you had dealt me that list a long time ago it might've saved me and some other friends and potential girlfriends a WHOLE LOT of trouble. Numbers 10 and 11 are perfectly suited for me.

Well done, sir. And I don't mind the vulgarity, I use it all the time.

It does seem funny when I realize that I can recite the periodic table, name several Marvel characters, name every country and capital, list 100 different species of animals, recite parts of history.....but can't tell when someone is flirting or flirt back in response.

Indeed. I think that applies to NT children and adults just as much as aspies. Belittling someone very rarely serves any useful purpose.

Welcome to WP, by the way. Nice first post. :)

I like this list. Thanks for writing it :-)

I will bookmark this page so I can read your list when NTs are trying to make me fit into their world and making me feel bad for being my normal aspie self. I know it will make me feel better!

: Great list I hated it when people tried to make me socialise, I remember when I was made to socialise with these two girls who didn't even want me around anyway. I preferred to play with their younger brother and sister even though they were a lot younger then me at least they excepted me unlike the two snobs.

Great list! Almost all of it applies to me except Number 10-I am actually an overly emotional person but that's because of other influences in my life rather than the Aspergers.

I wish you were all my Facebook friends. I think I'd be happier there.
