Ok, usually I go against the grain when it comes to criticising Islam, but even this is too kooky for me.

Here you go Tequila, just to prove I'm not biased.

That's the thing with fatwas - they are often contradictory. One scholar can issue one opinion, another one can issue another.

I would have expected something like this.

Fair enough. I wouldn't want the sort of people who would obey such fatwas to colonise space...

Since the Mars mission is a one-way trip it is essentially a suicide mission. I thought the True Believers liked suicide missions?

"477 Saudi citizens have applied for the mission, and six have so far been accepted."
(Maybe these people are not True Believers and just want to get away from theocracy.)

Thats a common misconception. They are sending components for a proto-settlement that will (according to Mars One) enable not only the colonists but also their descendents to survive indefinitely. So yup, I presume they plan to have marriages and children while they are there.

What worries me the most, is twofold. One - they've not been forthcoming with how they intend to get people there. This is far from a routine spaceflight. You can't just go there in a conventional spacecraft as we understand them. The longest anyone has been in space is 6 months, a one way trip to Mars, with our current technology, even without the weight luggage of a manned trip is 8 months. Thats before you consider the hazard of solar radiation in deep space.

Two- My understanding is that as a private rather than state sponsored project, its going to have a 'reality TV' emphasis rather than a scientific one. They plan to send average members of the general public, people who simply don't have the physical endurance of traditional astronauts or have been through the rigorous screening of conventional space programs. Consider that they will be enduring the most dangerous flight ever.

My prediction is that the travellers will die of radiation sickness and muscle atrophy before they get anywhere near Mars. This will be the 21st Century's Hindenburg or Titanic.

I don't know if this was at all serious, but I had once heard some TV network had wanted to make a reality show about immigrants to Mars on a one-way trip. Just imagine if that happened, and TV audiences watched as contestants slowly went insane, covered their faces with their own feces, and proceeded to bashing in one another's skull to eat brains!

Oh, they're deadly serious.

Apparently the first module of the settlement will be launching from Kazakhstan as early as 2016.

No-one will be accompanying it, mind you.

They plan to birth the 'first Martian' there, so I would presume female company would be implied.

There is a joke that goes like this:
- Did you know that arabs are going to take over the globe?
- Really? Why?
- Because the westerners will have settled in mars and the moon and the rest of space.

And I as muslim, I plan on staying here and contributing the the unity of human family before I "move out" to other places. Then earth will be Islams territory.

Really? Can you please elaborate? On this forum I do my best to stand up against Islamophobia, but statements like this make it harder.

I've spent time among muslims though and realise the greater proportion of them don't harbour delusions of some sort of a global caliphate.

This is about as crazy as the rule about breastfeeding adult men to turn them into blood relatives. 8O
