Comet Ison , You may have heard of it , it was said to be the brightest and greatest Comet of this century , I was exicted to look at it through my new telescope I'm getting for Christmas , as its closest approach should be December 26th 2013.

This is a sad day for many Astronomy lovers like me.

The next Comet that is quite visible from Earth is Haileys Comet , which will come around in about mid 2061.

Mind You there is a chance a small part of it may survived , but that's just it a small part of it.

Well this sucks. That said, I think it's a mixed blessing, in that this provides the world a BIG wake up call for the world in terms of our ability to plot such trajectories. We're part of a shooting gallery as I'm sure you're aware. Whatever. I hope to be around for Andromeda's impact anyway :P

It seems a fragment of it may have survived:

I thought the expert on the radio said it had survived, but was now hidden from view behind the sun. But maybe that was older news.

I posted an article saying basically this aswell , although still it would be a fragment , not the whole thing :/ , oh well I guess there's still the Comet that's supposed to impact Mars next year , that should be fun to watch.

Article: 'Zombie' Comet ISON may be back from the dead

They base their speculation on photographic images that show "A bright streak of material streaming away from the sun...".

This could still get interesting.

I have a lot of questions about Ison. I have been following it intently for a couple months. 1. We never were told how big it really was. 3 miles, not so much. When Isons picture was taken next to Encke (confirmed 3 miles) it (Ison) was huge by comparison and it (Ison) was 24 million miles further away than our frequent visitor Encke! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_fxAz-7w7Q Some sat Isons size was a large or larger than the earth! aprox. 4000 miles! NASA wouldn't give up the ultra-violet data concealing the size! Heres a interactive model :santa: . Click on date then Dec 25 touch earth with mouse and see 40 million miles distance expected. Hold down left button and move mouse 8)

Don't worry about it too much. I remember that Halley's Comet in 1986 was a bomb. It was so dim, couldn't even see the damn thing. Then Hale–Bopp came along in 1997, and it was spectacular. These things come along every generation or so. It's all just a bunch of space dust floating around. It's very unpredictable.

Awww, shame. I wonder whether I'll ever see another comet to compare to the splendour of Hale-Bopp?

Hard to get comets right.

They either fizzle, or they slam into the earth and cause mass extinctions!

They rarely put on a good safe clean show.

Oh well.

What was the name of the one that the Heaven's Gate believers went to?

That one is still out there, right?

Comet Hale-Bopp?

Yep , its still out there , infact some powerful telescopes can still see it ( its at about 30 magnitude right now )
Its about 33 AU away from the sun right now ( 1 AU equals 1 earth distance from the Sun )

According to my calculations it will next be visible in 6197.
