So thought compulsions are when you feel like you have to repeat something in your head a certain number of times , in a certain order every day instead of having a compulsion to preform a physical action like washing your hands, for example. I have this. It seems to be a rarer version of OCD. Anyone else have this? Will anyone share what they have to repeat to themselves?

My weird superstitions which I've been told are related to OCD: That 4 and 5 are bad luck numbers and 6 and 7 are good, when breathing in or turning on a light or opening a door I should think a good thought (something I want to happen) and when breathing out I should think a neutral thought. Also, there are certain articles of clothing that are "bad luck" which I avoid and certain colours of things I avoid like not wearing pink socks or underwear and not writing with a red pen. I know these are completely irrational but I still adhere to them. Does anyone else have these kind of superstitions? Anyone else willing to share their weird superstitions on here? I'm not sure what the point of this thread is, I guess I just want to feel less alone.

I like number 3, 6 and 9. Especially 3 and 9 (9 obviously because it's 3+3+3)I see those numbers as good signs, but I'm no longer obsessing over doing things those number of times as I did when I was a child and a teenager. But I am disappointed over not getting a flat that I applied for that was number 309 (3+0+9= 12, 1+2=3).

Come to think of it the number superstitions might be more common than the other ones I mentioned. I remember a thread on here about what numbers people liked and didn't like.

There was an episode of the tv show Obsessed about a guy whose OCD made him do things a certain number of times, also he had to have things pointing in certain directions and he was afraid of seeing an El Camino car and had a ritual he had to do when he saw it. I remember it because the guy was in the band "Pool of Frogs" and I looked them up on YouTube afterwards and they are pretty good. You could look the show up and see what you think if you can find that episode.

Yes, but I've had others as well but I've outgrown them. The number superstition was more pronounced before as I had to do stuff a certain number of times to prevent bad things from happening. Control control control

@OliveOilMom- I'll look up that episode. I used to watch the show "Obsessed" but haven't seen it on TV in awhile.

@IreneS- Interesting that you grew out of it. Mine got worse as I got older. I developed more weird superstitions and compulsions. The number ones involve doing things a certain number of times or not doing things a "bad" number of times but also not doing anything at a time that ends in a bad number. If I see that it's 2:34 on the computer or microwave clock I shouldn't do an action until it 2:35 and better if I wait until 2:36 because 6 is a better number. I don't have to keep checking the time but I panic I realize it's a time that ends in a bad number and I'm completing an action or beginning one.

Also, when I realize my number of posts on here ends in a 4 I have to make two more posts.

Is there a sense of satisfaction to doing a task at a good hour? What happens if you challenge the feeling and do things on a bad hour (if you've tried it)?
I think that the reason that I outgrew the more destructive obsessions was that I challenged myself quite a lot during a period of self transformation. I can still do it, as a form of habit: I think I shouldn't do something and I don't like the tone the thought is pronounced in (like a threatening, or ordering voice, except it's a thought of course) so I do exactly that thing. If I don't challenge thoughts once in a while, they begin to bully me. I like my freedom so it's worth the discomfort I experience in the interval between making the decision to challenge the thought and actually challenging it. When I've already done the action, the threatening thought disappears.

Yes, I have challenged the thoughts. I get a foreboding, panicky feeling that gets worse when I don't do the action at the good time. Sometimes I'll wait until the next "good time" and repeat the action.

I feel like if I don't tell my parents/sister "be careful with my kid(s)" when they watch my kids that something bad will happen.

I am also a fan of the number 9. :) It's a good number.

If I have a bad thought - can't leave the fan plugged in it could fall over and catch fire, or something similar - I feel compelled to take care of it right that moment or something bad WILL happen. And I can't think of anything else until I take care of it.

I dealt with a lot of OCDish stuff when I was younger (middle school age), but luckily they mostly went away after I started challenging them. However, I do still have some lingering minor issues. I name colors in my head sometimes, when I notice them for some reason (I'll have to name the most predominate colors in the room a few times). Sometimes it is numbers, but that is fairly rare (usually I'll count my fingers or count up and/or down from a certain number to anther number). Sometimes I do the same thing with letters (spell a word starting at a certain letter). I prefer odd numbers to even and usually try to get my post count to an odd number before I leave any site. That actually seems to be the most common one for me now, and even it is not much of a problem because it's always easy enough to get one more post (sometimes I'll just go to the welcome area of any site and say hello to new members to be friendly and fix my post count at the same time). Thankfully, I seem to have almost completely lost the feeling of doom or worry if I don't do these things, and mostly just do them because they are actually kind of relaxing in a way and I do feel a tiny bit off if I don't do them when I get the urge.

I'm not sure if that's an OCD thing , I think it's just anxiety in general but I'm the same way. One thing I'm afraid of is that I'll spill drops of water on the floor (in the bathroom while taking a shower or the kitchen while making tea) and my mum will slip on the floor and get hurt. My mum is both mentally and physically healthy and not elderly (she's almost 60). If I start about thinking that I have to go bring a towel and check if I spilled water immediately.

I had fairly severe number superstition for a while but it fell away and has been replaced with a complex compulsive "Myth" I have an intricate system of superstitions checks balances and obsessions

My OCD went through phases of different forms that fluctuated including a lot of the mental stuff that's been mentioned in this thread. I'm not going to get into it all because I'll get off topic & talk about the compulsions I had as well & other OCD things. My OCD in most every aspect is fairly good now that I'm on the rite medication for my OCD & I learned, grew & matured.
