I find this song to be very moving and distressingly relevant...

Especially this. It's pretty devastating when you figure out the songs narrator is stuck in the twin towers, assessing his life before the second plane hits. This song takes you to uncomfortable places, and conveys some harsh truths. As you might expect from the title, It's not at all jingoistic either.

I wonder if anyone looks at these, and at the point of music threads.

Here is another sad song that I like a lot.

Just to be pedantic, I have to point out that this album was recorded before 9/11 happened.

Yes, but it wasn't released until well after 2001.

Something odd is happening in this song from 2:59. Yes, we have a numbers station motif, but it helps build a soundscape that conveys a very particular place. I think it depicts someone senses slowly picking up on the devastation around him in an office environment, his heartbeat, falling debris, a clicking sound which reminds me of busted fluorescent light blinking, the phone off the hook. When heard in context with the second half, the first half seems like to me like a shock induced moment of calmness.

I'd be really surprised if this wasn't what they were going for, because for me it was heavily evocative, but who knows.
