Since my son has recently (this month) been diagnosed with ASD his pediatrician has referred us to a neurologist. What should I expect at this appointment? I have some concerns that my son is having absence seizures, but other than that I don't know what I should bring up to the neurologist.

Our neurologist specializes in neurodevelopmental disorders exclusively. When I took my kids, I brought with me pretty much every checklist I could find online that outlined all of the concerns I had. It helped me track and express the symptoms in an extensive manner. I also brought in a "Rules In/Rules Out" list for each diagnosis I thought was possible. I do think I am weird that way. I don't think most people do that. And our neurologist was the one who did the diagnosis. I have been to a number of neurologists for the kids and the first appointment ranged from 5 minutes of observation followed by "he needs a prescription" to a 2 hour interview/observation period followed by "what are your thoughts? This is what I'm thinking..." So, my best advice is to write down your concerns so that you will not overlook any during the appointment, as well as any questions you have. If you think he is having absence seizures, I'd grab my cell phone the next time it seems to be happening and video tape it. Regarding the EEG...both of my kids tolerated it well, and my daughter was only 3 at the time and didn't follow directions very well. THe worse part was the "sticky" stuff on her skin as she had sensory issues. But over all, not bad.

Good luck.
