I have decided that I'm going to do NaNoWriMo... Though since November has already passed, I'm going to do it on my own terms and start on January 1st, ending on January 31st. I have read in the book No Plot No Problem that it is best to get other writers on board because competition is a good motivator (that, and it's good to be in touch with people who understand the trials and tribulations of being a writer). Does anyone want to participate in New Year's Novel Writing (NewYeaNoWri) with me? If not, then can you at least be my cheerleader and check up on my progress/offer encouragement? At the very least, I'd like to make some more friends doing this.

Thanks in advance! :)

Oh, and for anyone who wants to participate:

Start Date: January 1st, 2014

End Date: January 31st, 2014

Word Count Goal: 50,000 words

That's 1,666 words/day. Definitely doable.

So cool - just today I opened the files on a story I started last year and have not touched in months. This could be a great way to get myself focused.

Yeah, I want to participate. What's next?

Brainstorm some story ideas (No Plot No Problem says that it's best to work on a story from scratch rather than a preexisting project), jot down some notes about potential characters, and maybe do a small amount of research on the topic of your novel (the book suggests doing the "Five Point Google" - googling some aspect of your book and using only information you can retrieve by using only 5 results)

Then on the 1st, we can keep in touch through this thread and/or through PM.

I attempted Nanowrimo and failed at starting on time, but then ended up writing 80k worth of words into a story over the last two weeks of November and into the first half of December. It's all outline/rough draft level work and some notes, but it's more than I've ever done before. I'm now working on another story, that I had started on before. I'm trying to organize it so I know what I've written in it and how much, and I've found that I'm already 10k into it. These last few months have been a boon to me with writing.

I won't say I'll commit to anything, but I will keep on writing.

Thanks, IdahoRose. I do think I need a fresh start and new approach. My first attempt got bogged down in Analysis Paralysis. Sooo typical of me. My frigging outlines, charts, graphs, multi-colored post-its, and other stuff made my attempt at writing look more like a blueprint for the space shuttle. My left brain beat and stomped my right brain into a non-functioning state. I will try the book you mention.

This is my first-ever post on Wrongplanet! I just joined (this website) last night (and experimented with the online "chat" feature - which went well).

Today (now), I am browsing these discussion forums (again, for the very-first time). Now, what all-that has to do with YOU is this:

I'm delighted to find a discussion thread such as this one!!

A serious writer, myself (for over eight years), I'm not-yet at the 'Novel' level, however, I wanna just say that I support all your efforts here(!), cuz I def. know how difficult writing can sometimes get, so this is def. the thread that I wanna "get my feet wet (on)" and show support for! (Haha! Ignore that grammar!)

"Break a leg (keyboard/pen)", everyone!! !

I wanted to wish everyone well, too. I completed NaNoWriMo this year, so I'm afraid I'm all out of novel juice. It's definitely worth it in the end even if it reads terrible when you look back over the last few days.

On a side note, I just got a starmap for the universe I'm currently writing in. Going to attempt to print it out today on a plotter I have access to.

Now I can see where everything is in relation to everything else star wise, and two of my stories can make more sense because I can now wrap my head around details I needed to figure out. These details were keeping me from starting, but no longer will they do that.

So more writing... Lots more writing.

Thanks. I was able to expand about 20k worth of work organized between three stories just in the last few days up to about 35k. Some of it was already written or in outline form, but now that I got some of the spatial relationship between locations down, and also the logical organization of some of what I already did, I know that I'm quite a bit further than I thought. Also I fixed a few referrence errors that I had made between the stories as they are all in the same universe and within a relatively close time frame cosmologically speaking. About thirty years.

I had no idea I already had so much work already done.

And I think the fact that I stayed home most of the weekend and yesterday due to bad weather helped with focusing in on my writing.

I hope everyone is making progress with whatever they are writing.
