a nice lighthearted thread where we can act all autistic about what we study.

you can talk about subjects, post their descriptions and go on autistic rants about the subject matter.

i enrolled today for my 2014 academic year and this is the description of a topic i chose.

Quote:
Spatial information is fundamental to decision making in all environmental disciplines. It is widely used in natural sciences areas from agriculture, environmental management to mining industries. The breadth of applications of spatial information is increasing rapidly due to a vastly improved availability of spatial data and the recently accelerated development of geographic information systems and remote sensing tools. The subject introduces theory, history and current methods of spatial information presentation, generation, and analysis. It gives an overview of major Australian and South Australian mapping programs and spatial information in government agencies. Students are introduced to factors that shape the landscape and learn how to interpret land surface features. In field exercises students are introduced to surveying, the use of Global Positioning Systems, field navigation and safety.

I'm majoring in psychology in anticipation of becoming an autism specialist able to give assessments. I love psychology in all its forms, especially abnormal psych. I find studying disorders fascinating, I suppose because I find abnormal people so much more interesting than average run-of-the-mill "sane" people. Of particular interest to me apart from autism are ADHD, OCD, narcissistic personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, learning disabilities (especially dyslexia/dyscalculia) and sensory processing disorder. Maybe I'll broaden the scope of my higher studies and specialise in diagnosing all of those disorders. I also hope in my spare time to help educate the general public as well as both primary and higher education facilities about the truths of these disorders, particularly autism, to give faculty and disability support staff a clearer understanding of the ways in which they can help people with the disorder/s and put together more effective supports for them.

I study physics at university. In the UK there are no majors or minors, you pick one subject only, which you do throughout university, and I much prefer this.

I picked it because it was always really my special interest, I think it's amazing, and I could go on and on and on about it for hours on end to people if asked to haha. I intend to become either an engineer, so I can use my creative side, and for the problem solving, or a lawyer, which is surprisingly easy to achieve even without a law degree in this country, because I'm great at arguing and debating, and I'd love the problem solving aspect of that, too. Also, I like being right, haha.

Are you interested in lots of things? Then try to combine several different interests. For example, if you are interested in foreign cultures, geography, and politics, you may find the area of development cooperation very interesting.
