There have been a number of occasions in recent years, where I've been accused of being a troll.

I state my perspective, which *in some way* doesn't match what most of the others are saying or thinking about the subject of discussion, and then, to my complete surprise, one or more people will call me out as a troll or fake.

I have thought they were saying (vehemently) that they think that I am not "real", that I am taking up a false perspective in order to get other people activated or upset, perhaps in order to get attention. Is that right? That is my understanding of what a troll is.

There is a thread in the love and dating forum where this has just happened. The poster quoted my entire comment and said only "don't feed the troll, guys". I asked for clarification as to why I had been singled out in this way, but no one has spoken to it.

I had hoped that, in a forum for autism, I would have a different experience than I have had in neurotypicalland forums.

What is going on?
What is the family friendly way of saying "mindfu@&"?

Here is a link which might work for directing you if you are curious to see one example, in context (on page 2):

If it is just the one guy he might be being a troll and just trying to get you worked up. I would think on a site like this people could say what is on their mind. I would say if someone came on this site and said "people with autism and aspergers are all a bunch of ret*ds" or something like that they could be called a troll, but not what you said there.

I don't know why they said you were a troll. I didn't see anything wrong with what you said. I don't even really know what a troll is. You'd think that being around the internet for awhile, that id know what that is. But I don't. I wouldn't get worked up about being called that since it doesn't even make sense. It seems to me that people say troll when someone sees you don't agree with the majority, but maybe I'm wrong. Voice your opinion even if it's different, but of course, say it in a nice way. I hate when people give a different opinion and they word it to make it sound like everyone else is stupid. So don't do that and you'll be fine :-)

A troll is someone who incites people. Usually they do things like posting material that is the opposite of what the forum is about. For example if someone came on WP and started posting offensive comments about people with AS, or a person who does on a pro-life forum and posts pro-abortion stuff.

It can also be someone who just posts inflammatory material without ever backing it up.

Just go over to the Politics, Philosophy and Religion section. Calling someone a "troll" seems to be a favorite insult. Don't take it personally.

^^^^ The example thread you provided was about pity for the OP, or at least it was for the people who responded. You were called a "troll" because the guy who called you a troll was too lazy to read what you wrote, and only read the first sentence of the first paragraph, then skipped to the first sentence of the second paragraph, then read the last sentence and assumed you were being smarmy. It's not you. It's the lazy idiots who don't read.

I don't think you need to worry Greenhousegashers! It could just be that you laid out an all to enticing piece of troll bait!
I guess with so many members you can't expect everyone to take a shine. Sometimes I am concerned that I am the only one that 100% of other members like.

Thanks people! Great feedback. I especially appreciated the suggestion that the would-be troll hunter may have only partially read my post.

because in today's internet society, that is the go-to put-down for anyone

especially if you state your input, however well-intentioned or well-proposed, if people don't like it (especially if it makes them look like an idiot), they squeal "TROLL!! !"
