I've started to realize that during winters in recent years I tend to get quite depressed. It's dark outside by the time I leave work, so there's no time except for my days off to do things that involve doing things outside. Even when it is light out, it's too cold to comfortably do anything outside
I wish I could just sleep all through winter!

Anyone else experience this and have any ways to avoid the depression?

yeah its normal, its called Winter Blues and tends to be famous with both NTs and ASD/AS people, its a lack of vitamin D you would usually get from the sun, but now that the sun is usually covered by cloud and only sticks around for a little while, you get less and become depressed.

EDIT: you can get some D drops and put that in your food. or even try and get out during sunny days, stay active and eat healthy. if it persists to the spring, talk to your doctor

Yes, I always get depressed in the winter too. I deal with it by seeing it as a time of 'low energy' rather than 'sadness', and I plan my life around being less active in the winter. I give myself permission to relax and focus on easy activities, and save my more ambitious projects for summer!

I love winter, way to hot and humid during the summer.

However I don't like extreme cold, even if you are indoors in a apartment its still kind of cold.

30 degrees and up is perfect winter weather for me.

Most of the time I do, but not this year, apparently, since it's been warmer than normal in my area.

Just the opposite, I get depressed during the summer.
Or any sunny say for that fact.

Not really depressed, just frustrated and disappointed.

During the really hot parts of summer I tend to be more active at night when it's cooler. I don't like either extreme in temperature.

SAD (seasonal affective disorder) is very common during the winter months. There are lamps available that simulate the UV rays of natural sunlight, they're not too expensive. I take vitamin D gelcaps every day, just because I don't normally spend a lot of time in the sunshine, even in the summer.

Also, in the US, milk is fortified with vitamin D, as required by the FDA.

Winter is the time of the year I like the least, and I always feel depressed when September or October comes because it's the end of the summer and the onset of the winter ahead. Plus I don't like the long nights either, and getting up for work in the morning when it's still dark is depressing too. I get established to the long nights by December, but I still prefer the shorter nights.

This winter, though, we haven't had any cold weather to speak of so far, nor any snow, so that's made me feel a bit more relaxed because I do hate the snow and the ice and the disruption it can cause. But my dislike to the snow is more like an irrational fear, because I just hate it when I can't see the grass and the pavements and everywhere's cold and icy. It's just not to my liking. But anyway, as I was saying, this year we seem to be getting a lot of rain and milder temperatures, and I am happy if that continues on throughout the rest of the winter.

But I still don't like the long nights, though. I hate it getting dark at 4pm. I love it when it gets dark around 10pm. :)

yes, I get seasonal affective disorder bigtime. I now take mega doses of vitamin D3, after a blood test revealed that I'm way too low, and I've found that has helped my S.A.D. very much so. Wish I'd known that years ago. Doesn't help that I was born in the middle of winter in Seattle to a depressed mother, I recon I was probably born with depression. But, I'm glad that vitamin D is relatively cheap, and I recommend it to everyone who spends too much time indoors, which is pretty much every American, and especially Aspies

I think I'll try taking some vitamin D and see if that helps any.

I use a sunlamp for my seasonal affective issues and find that it works really well for me- I use it for about 30 minutes each day and usually notice a boost within a few minutes. Mine was about $35 so it's not hard to find one for relatively cheap.

This is the one I have, if you're curious:

Another SAD case reporting in.
I live in N.E. Scotland and in deep winter it is only light between 9am and 3pm so I am usually light deficient.
I do use a light and take vitamin D supplements but also I take St. John's Wort as a mood stabiliser.

My psychologist said I should use my light all year round which I think makes sense as I rarely go outdoors in daylight hours.
