I'm curious how many people here play MMO's vs multiplayer games, vs single player games?

Or maybe another way to phrase the question, do MMO's require to much interaction with other people in order to progress beyond "newb" status?

I play one MMO, and since I'm on dial-up, I really can't play effectively in a party (too much going on to sync with on a dial-up connection).

Rest of my stuff is single player.

I play Runescape and there is a lot of solo content in that game. I go for long periods of time without even talking to anyone. If you like to do hard bosses or play certain minigames you'll need other people and there are a few quests that you can't do alone but overall most things can be done solo.

I play a few MMO's. I'm constantly on the look out for F2P MMO's of high quality.

MMO list of tried and tested MMO's:
- Tera Online (great game, might not last long sadly, the combat is amazing but it has a rather generic questing system)
- Dragons Prophet (actually fairly decent from what i've played of it, need to try a bit more)
- APB: Reloaded (3rd person over the shoulder shooter. MMO qualities. s**t community. Amazing customization options. Could use new stuff but meh, Still ok)
- Rift (was generic and rather boring actually. Don't recommend playing it but meh, if it's your sort of thing, go for it.)
- Runescape (BORING! seriously though, the amount of content that is unavailable to free players is surprising when you think about it. not to mention how bad the gameplay is. i do have to give props though, it is playable in the browser with no need for any major additional downloads.)

I pay for that. I wouldn't play it free.

I am trying to quit WoW again.

I just feel bad for telling my raid leader that I don't want to raid anymore when we're making good progress and they don't have anyone to replace me with.

Is WoW really that good? I mean, I've tried the free 20 levels and I wasn't too fond of the gameplay :/ Is it something that will grow on you or is it just an annoyance that you gottta live with? I'm told that it is amazing but I'm not to fond of the monthly fee's so unless it's as good as people say it is, I wouldn't try it again :/

No. I don't play any MMOs. I generally don't play any multiplayer games at all other than 1 on 1 fighting games.

I loved playing Multiplayer, when voicechat mostly was used only for raidprogress, and instead you used for guild-communication Forum and written Chat.

Now that more and more Guilds replace a propper forum and written Chat with voicechat, it sadly sucks to me. :(

If WoW was FREE to play like LOTRO, I would have stuck with it.

Having to pay each month to play killed the idea for me.

LOTRO is free. Once you get past certain regions, any quests outside the epic (main) quest line have to be purchased or you have to be a VIP member (monthly subscription). Certain upgrades cost points which are awarded through game play, but most have to buy points to acquire stuff when they want it. I know it may not seem any different, but WoW locks you out of character growth if you don't pay (which means you can't progress in the game). LOTRO doesn't do that, but buying expansions and "upgrades" helps your character grow faster as quest completions award more points and loot than just killing monsters all day.

By now, I'm sure I've spent $200-300 on LOTRO, but I own every map released in the game, so I can create new characters on my account and go anywhere I want and do most any quest. Certain skirmishes need to be purchased, but since those are best done with groups, and I can't really deal with multiple players on dial-up, it's no loss to me.

LOTRO is really fun, and it's really the only MMO that actually has a good story and atmosphere (most just have bad english translations of a story that wasn't good to begin with). I've played it on and off for a few years. It doesn't have much, if any, end-game nowadays after a recent patch, but I still highly recommend it for the experience.

I can get satellite, but it only offers bandwidth, no ping...which is needed for online gaming.

Phone gets faster response time, but lacks bandwidth.

What's insulting is that roads all around us owned by the other phone company has had hardware upgrades and have broadband service. Our phone company refuses to upgrade the equipment/wiring on our road. Can't even get DSL.

Depends on the day. I like MMOs when it gives you the ability to play as single player and not be required to play with others. I guess that kind of defeats the point, however. There are also sometimes when I feel like playing on my own.

only MMO I play is Defiance, which I rarely play ( and the only other one I'm even considering atm is DCU ). I prefer single-player and co-op games in small groups ( like 2 players in Diablo III or couch co-op in the classic TMNY arcade game for example )
