for as long as I can remember, i've always felt uncomfortable getting my hair cut at a barbershop/salon. It seems too personal/intimate a thing to let any stranger do... and then you get that half hour of weirdness where you know it's awkward you're not making small talk with the person and of course... your barber/hairdresser is usually the first person to know there's something off about you....

finally when I finished highschool I decided... what the hell i'm going to try cutting my own hair. I got one of those shavers/buzzers with a dozen different sized tips and i've been giving myself pretty damn neat haircuts since. The trick is to stand in front of a mirror, and put a second mirror behind you or hold one behind you occasionally to see the progress on the rear of your head. I'm 31 now, and i haven't seen the inside of a salon/barbershop for over 10 years and it is AWESOME. It saves me time, money, and unlike NT's, i dont need the extra ego-stroke of having someone else cut my hair for me.

There have got to be other aspies out there who have the same weird discomfort with getting their hair cut and have decided to cut it themselves. Share your stories :)

I also cut my own hair. :) Pretty much gave up on getting it done when I was fourteen. I've given myself some pretty bad haircuts, but I don't mind too much, and I've managed some that were okay...

I cut my own hair, but it's not for anything related to autistic symptoms. (Tho' I don't think I like the sound of the clippers.)

I got tired of seeing the cost of a haircut go up by another 50 cents every six months. At a store I saw a set of hair clippers that didn't cost much more than a haircut.

I bought them and haven't looked back.

The only thing is I'm no stylist, and have no delusions of being one. I changed how I wore my hair, and now use a single clipper attachment over my whole head. It works, it's short, it saves money, and also makes the haircuts last longer.

You seem to have both Aspie and neurotypical traits

What would these results mean? Been told here I must be a "half pint".

Yep. I feel extremely uncomfortable at the hairdresser, so I just keep it shoulder length, which is pretty easy to do on my own. (I even learned how to do really light layering so it falls better - I'm so proud of myself!)

I'm mixed Asian and black and my hair is more negroid than it is Asian. I also live in a neighbourhood where my type of stiff curly hair doesn't get cut by the local barbers. Consequently, I cut my own hair. I've been doing it for about 20 years. Most of the time I get it right.

My hair has always been clipped at home by my mom, because i would never cooperate for a barber. When i get older, and my fine motor skills allow, i will use the clippers on myself.

I just can't afford to pay anyone to do it and don't have any friends, so I have to do it myself.

For me, it's really not much of a trick, since I wear it in a ponytail all the time, anyway. When it gets so long it's smacking me in the back during a workout, I just pull it back, take the scissors and lop off the end.

I've been cutting mine since I was 14. I only had it cut by someone else maybe 2 or 3 times since then. I never liked having it cut by someone else. It was torture and no one ever cut it right. I got some really horrible haircuts as a kid. They would cut it too short not realizing how much it would draw up when it dried. I always cut my hair while it's dry, it's better that way.

I do, and I'm encouraged to see how many others do too. I thought it was my dirty little secret. I don't do it for discomfort reasons though. I just don't really trust anyone to do what I want with my hair, so I'd rather take responsibility for it myself.

get this I was near a post box , quietly sitting on the ground minding my own business filling out a form to send away , than those weirdo nt's (police) pull me over for "suspicious" behaviour I wont bore you with all the details except the bit where they arrogantly point out that I wasn't being "sociable " I kid you not in my mind I'm thinking did It ever occur to you morons that a aspergers type with severe anxiety is "not up to it" no instead I retort why would I speak and further incriminate myself for doing nothing wrong in the 1st place , I had them stumped :P

[b]Even more disgusting they said their going to note on my permanent record that I wasn't "sociable" and these fools have gone to university now ? what for to learn how to direct traffic
