Welcome to the insomnia club, opened to all night owls and those who love staying up all night. :D Are you an insomniac ? Do you have permanent black shadows and bags under your eyes ? Do your parents constantly b***h about your abnormal sleeping habits ? Well you came to the right place :)

I don't have insomnia, but for whatever reason my brain thinks it's hilarious to screw with my sleeping ability if there's a change in routine the next day (example school, or friend coming to my house), independent of how tired I seem to be.

I'll be lying in bed and feel that I should be asleep within 10-20 minutes, but before I know it an hour goes by. I start creating daydream scenarios in my head automatically or sift through any information I gathered that day and then another hour goes by. Around the passing of the 3rd hour my eyes feel like they're almost stuck together but I still can't sleep, and I'll be stressing out. I'll be thinking 'I can't sleep, oh god I'm not going to get enough sleep! I will feel like crap!'. It's like a self fulfilling prophecy, as I end up lying there for literally 6-7 hours and then manage to scrape in half an hour to an hours worth of sleep.

-.-'

EDIT - In other words I guess you could call it situational insomnia.

Last night's sleep was awful. I don't really get physically tired, though. I am profoundly emotionally tired.

I go to bed at a decent time, but I wake up early often. I woke up at 3 this morning and thought, I might as well watch TV.

I can fall asleep alright, but I wake up at stupid-o-clock.

It's absolutely s**t, especially if I'm on an early shift and I've only had about 2 or 3 hours sleep.

I think I awoke very early for obvious reasons. It's the day after Valentine's Day, which means it's Mick Avory's birthday. :D

Ouch and I bet it doesn't help if you get worn out just from socializing with people :(

I do that as well sometimes and can't go back to sleep afterwards ... At least it's not sleep paralysis or exploding head syndrome :/

I read that at times when you eat something just before bed, your body tends to trick itself when it's digesting food. I think it's because it has something to do with the energy from the food and how it makes your body think it's fully rested.

I do get that.

In fact I've just Googled exploding head syndrome as I've never heard of it, only to find out that I do get that. So there's yet another mystery solved curtsey of WP.

Sometimes I wake up with electric shock feelings, it is really painful.

That's a mystery yet to be solved.

It always sounded like a loud ass bee that's giving me electric shocks when I have exploding head syndrome, followed by a hellish episode of sleep paralysis :/

I read about some techniques to handle sleep paralysis like rapidly moving your eyes and trying your hardest to move a muscle. I have learned to relax some when it happens and just wait it out.

Here's the Wikipedia article on it.

Oh, I don't really mind the sleep paralysis so much these days. I'm so used to it and it only happens a couple of time a month. I do relax into it and it sometimes becomes like a lucid dream.

The electric shocks in my feet when I wake up out of a nightmare are horrendous though.

It doesn't happen that often but I can't find anything about it on Google.

I awoke at 2 with the fastest racing thoughts that I have ever experienced. I was correlating all sorts of things to other things with no sense at all. I felt delirious. I could see the shapes of pale faces and hands in the darkness. It was not until 2:30 that I felt coherent enough to try to speak. I threw a lot of words at the unfortunate nurse at the door, but I think she somehow got the idea. We went to watch TV. We watched the end of a programme about wildlife and the environment in China. We watched the beginning of a programme about a Mesopotamian tribe whose name I can't begin to spell when my thoughts sped up a bit again and turned to harming myself. I kept hearing odd things, mumbling voices having faraway conversations, despite nobody being awake. I went up to the pharmacy. They offered me risperidone, 1mg. f**k that. Not only would that be useless for the problem at hand, it'd leave me feeling strange and acting oddly all throughout the next day. Apparently I'm no longer written up for anything else. I asked if they could call a doctor and get me a once-only prescription for something other than an atypical antipsychotic. I'd rather be lobotomized than take atypical antipsychotics. They said they'd leave me with a nurse in my room and check back in twenty minutes. Things aren't getting better. I just want them to call the doctors and get me something.

I'm not insomniac, but I function better at nightime. Luckily I get to choose my work schedule.
