You've never known my parents. They were of the opinion shoot first, and to hell with the questions! When they said "Jump", you responded, "How high?", then did the deed. If they said "S***", you responded "What color, consistency, and where do you want it?"

Gee I guess put anything down you have in your hand before you answer the door. You never know if some idiot will mistake the item as a gun and shoot you.

Is this some new trend? I'm hearing more and more stories of cops going too extreme recently. What is going on? Well, that's it. Never trust an officer. Next thing you know, they'll start beating down on people who stare cross-eyed.

I've read multiple times, that many police departments reject applicants with an IQ more than one standard deviation away from normal, in either direction.

We need common sense tests to replace them, a high IQ does not necessarily mean that you can use common sense.

but maybe a higher IQ would equate with faster thinking/calculation of risk, and so a cop with a higher IQ might not as quickly and reflexively reach for the iron when there were other alternatives. just a thought.

theres nothing illegal about answering the door with a firearm

the cop should be charged with murder but thats a pipedream she is going to get a few weeks paid vacation as a reward

My niece is a cop,my bio mom was a correctional officer in men's max security.neither would ever be that reckless. My niece has never had to shoot anyone, and where she works is a very dangerous area. The US/Mexican border.
I agree that this officer should be discharged from duty, but being a woman had nothing to do with it.

The problem is not that the cops are too dumb, the problem is their culture of being at war and acting more like an occupying force than peace officers. Police work is safer than delivering pizza, yet you still hear this constant drumbeat of "officer safety" as their number one priority, despite the safety of the job and the gear they carry. To paraphrase The Wire, cops today are too afraid of getting their asses kicked, so they pull the trigger instead.

If I lived in the USA, I would keep a reminder on the door with a checklist of things to do and not to do when the Police arrive at your door. #1 on the list would be: Make sure to have nothing in your hands.
followed by: Do not speak unless commanded to do so
Ensure all citizenship documents are in a place Police can easily access
Keep Identification on you at all times
Keep submissive appearance. Do not let them think you can be a threat. The WILL kill you.
Keep hands visible at all times. Put hands in pocket, you get killed.
Consider yourself lucky if you get shocked a few times. At least they did not kill you-yet.

Nothing like the Petit Army over there. Not all forces have guns (the SEK do) and over half of the shots fired by Police are for warnings- German Police fire less shots in a year than USA fires in one month. If we need to contain a crowd, we use numbers, not fire-power. Our officers are not perfect either. There are still issues with use of force (non lethal) and some financial corruption, but we certainly would not shoot someone with a game controller in hand. Many cases of brutality are due to the strain in German-Turk relations. Still unacceptable and the government is working to address the issue.
