I've heard rumors of doing away with the spectrum and just calling it "Autism" at least here in NC. So far they got me Diagnosed with the ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) until they redo the DSM 5...I am kinda nervous they may do that Judging by IQ but not the "Needs" part like they have in the past. came just a whisker hair away from ending up with no more help from SSI Medicaid or what you will...I'm really praying I get into this new one in May and keep he "ASD" Diagnosis. Hope it won't affect any of yall either...If all goes right, this may turn out to be less of a deal than 2012... (Fingers on both hands X-ed) Are any other of yall dreading this DSM thing?

They already have switched to DSM 5 and you're in luck because you were diagnosed with the new system. Autism Spectrum Disorder is the new diagnosis. Autistic Disorder, PDD NOS and Asperger's were the old labels which are now subsumed under Autism Spectrum Disorder. The new diagnosis isn't based on IQ at all but on symptoms and impairments (needs). Your benefits are not going to change because of DSM 5. Even people who were diagnosed under the old system won't have their services taken away from them now although I was told that in about 5-10 years they may be required to be re-evaluated to see if they meet DSM 5 criteria for certain services and others will always just accept the old diagnosis. I don't know. You'll be fine.

For myself I do not fear getting undiagnosed because of the person who diagnosed me and because according to the DSM 5 your old diagnosis is supposed be carried over under the new name. I do fear not being able to get benefits if I want them in the future due to a economic or civil collapse of the USA and the growing consensus here that "High Functioning Autism/Aspergers" is overhyped or never existed at all.
In the end when they look at my age and that I do have a work history the I will have a decent shot at getting them. Who I really fear for is those those have been not been diagnosed yet, especially women.

I hate it. I'm very worried about my daughters services. She was diagnosed with PDD-NOS with the old test a few years ago. This year she was re evaluated at school using the new test. But very badly. The person who re evaluated her never even observed her at school. She just used the info she got from her teacher and from me. And told me my daughter is barely eligible for services. Tried to take them all away which I fought because I'm not a pushover. So she still has most of her services for now at least.
