Do you have a schedule? If you are righting a book or short story do you only right when your inspired? How often do you work on it? What are you inspired by? How do you get though writers block?

I have a bad habit of writing something like a short story or fan fic or even things like videos or songs but never finish.

I seem to write when I am inspired. I have made many stories before, but I haven't finished a lot of them. I tend to write about universes I really like, or about ones I make up. 8)

Sounds like me

Except I get inspiration more from experiences with real life.

Sometimes I have, such as making characters based off my friends. Yet I am mostly into fantasy and science fiction. (Mostly sci-fi.)

I attempt to write whenever I can if I can focus. This ends up being when I get home after work till bedtime. I also attempt to write while waiting when I arrive at locales such as the doctors office. Sometimes at work when it's dead, I work on stuff to past the time.

There are a few things that can easily disrupt this. Becoming sick where it's physically uncomfortable is one. I also have a hard time when other people are around making noise and occasionally trying to interact with me. I have sleep issues and on occasion while writing, I will fall asleep in the middle because I'm just really sleepy.

I'll describe my schedule over the last week. It's not always like this but this was what it was last week.

Sunday -- Woke up, writing, massage/chores, writing, bedtime -- total: 2.5k
Monday -- woke up, work, doctor(wrote while I waited), writing, bedtime -- total - 1.7k
Tuesday -- woke up, work, writing, bedtime -- total: 1.2k
Wednesday -- woke up, writing(no work due to weather), bedtime -- total: 4.9k
Thursday -- woke up, work, doctors, sick so I read a book instead of writing, bedtime -- 121 words
Friday -- woke up, work(wrote for a bit while at work), social group meeting(I did write a critique for someone), party, bedtime -- total: 1.2k
Saturday -- woke up, hang with friend, hang with other friends, bedtime -- Total: 0

I shotgun it.
Basically, I look around me. I look at games, the society, movies, ect. I use my hobbies as inspiration. Like recently, I read the rules to Gorkamorka. After I read the rules, I began writing fanfiction about a person on said planet.
For original stories, that's something different. I dream, or come up with random ideas. I then add to these ideas and dreams. As I continue these dreams and ideas, I look at what can be cut and what can be kept. This is the hard part because I might lose an Idea I really liked at first, but now hate.
As for writers block.....hard to say. Usually, Its best to rest awhile. But then again, that doesn't always work.

I'd like to have a schedule but that's just not realistically possible with my insomnia and I only write when I am inspired
anyway because I find my stories suffer if I'm not in to it when writing.

Nowhere near as often as I should

What are you inspired by?

Literally anything can inspire me to write but once again I really have to feel the need to write

I don't, I find I have to just wait it out when I become stuck

I tend to write at night, after my wife and daughter have gone to bed, during which time I consume a second pot of coffee (the first having been drank up prior to writing). I have the news on in the background, so the silence doesn't spook me, and I can occassionally get a little distraction if something isn't working out. Much of the time, I have to feel inspired - which unfortunately has given me the excuse to procrastinate and be lazy more times than I want to admit.
In regards to writer's block - I have had it, where I just can't seem to come up with ideas, or inspiration. Sometimes just waiting it out makes it go away, while other times, I might wrestle with it, and try forcing something on the computer page. In that last case, what I produce more often than not is crap.

My writing process involves lots and lots of thinking. Often times it's as simple as applying principles from David Farland, Writing Excuses and Extra Credits to whatever fancy concept I came up with. Actually getting it written down sometimes has a bit of difficulty, as I still procrastinate much more than I should > <

Procrastinating seems to be something we writers beat ourselves up about a lot.

My ideas come from everywhere

I get them from other peoples works(TV, books, games, news, movies, speeches, tech manuals). This can be seeing an overall story and going, I can do this better. The idea might also just be some small part of someone elses work where I go, that was a really interesting setting mechanic, plot device, theme, topic etc...

I now collect pictures for inspiration and look at them when I get stuck. These pics can be of anything. Cars, nature, people, objects, buildings, artwork, weapons, animals, monsters. The style doesn't matter. The pics could be digital, photography, or an actual painting.

I have recently started writing poetry. I always wanted to do it, but hated the results when I tried to write.
Recently it all came together - believe it or not, my son and I were using our Ouija board. I asked to speak to T.S. Eliot and requested inspiration and help in order to write. I went to take a bath after, and it was like the poem just wrote itself in my head. Whether it truly was the spirit of T.S. Eliot or my own desire to write poetry, I'll never know. But since then I've written over 30 poems (that was only 2 months ago), most of them very, very good. I just self-published my first book on Amazon :)
My writing process? I wish I could explain it. I tend to write what I call "historical snapshots" - little snippets in the lives of ordinary people at various times in history. I've written about a young girl who was forced to leave home during the Depression, pioneer women facing starvation and quite a few about different aspects of the Holocaust. I would say I try to put myself in the place of my main character, visualize the setting and try to feel the emotions my characters must be experiencing. I do also look up a lot of facts, read articles and look at pictures if I can find any. I like to be as accurate and realistic as possible.

You know, I just realized I never mentioned where I get my ideas from.
Actually, a great deal of them come from the news. As I right horror, there are plenty of horrific situations that give me ghoulish inspiration!

When I write, I often let the words flow and let them write themselves basically. The only thing that stops me is my depression and negativety that tells me critics will react harshly and nobody will like it enough to be worth it. I basically never have writers block since my mind is always overflowing with ideas to the point that I'm like " great, another idea popped in my head...geez."

I always write in snippets, paragraphs or larger from all spots in the story when they interest me. Then I join them all together.

I usually write with a word processor (such as Word) in Outline mode. I create a major heading entitled "Bon Mots", and then in just a random, stream of consciousness manner start entering words, phrases, sentences, or whatever may come to mind.

After a few minutes these usually grow into sentences, then paragraphs, and so on. I can then use the Outline mode features to readily group / rearrange these into something more meaningful. Even after the prose begins to form I still keep the Bon Mots section going; it is my way of keeping the words flowing and helps me avoid writer's block.

This sort of relates to what I have heard called a "snowflake" approach to writing.
