There was a series of letter bombs sent in the mail in England earlier this Month. The were small, more fireworks in envelopes then bombs. Now the UK police think they have caught the person who sent the letter bombs. Unfortunately, to me he seems to be an Aspie. If he turns out to have Aspergers/Autism, it may be very damaging to the autism community in the UK.

Just thought I'd let people know before hand. You know how the UK media can get obsessed with the latest story e.g. Jade Goodie, H5N1, Honours for Sale etc. It is possible that the media could get obsessed with the idea that people with Asperger’s are dangerous.

When I first heard that the letter bombs were sent to companies dealing with Transport, I immediately suspected that an Aspie with a transport obsession gone wrong might be responsible. Just checked Sky News (TV), it's the main headline. The report lasted 4 minutes, not too long.

Quote:
From the Daily Telegraph:

A loner with a penchant for candlelit vigils in his garden is being questioned over a series of letter bomb attacks that have left nine people injured.

Miles Cooper, a 26-year-old school caretaker who does not drive, was arrested at his home near Cambridge early today on suspicion of sending seven letter bombs in the past month, several to the offices of companies with links to traffic regulation enforcement.

Cooper, described by his uncle as "a lonely boy most of his life", had been under surveillance for some time at the terrace house in the village of Cherry Hinton, where he has lived with his mother and sister all his life.

Police sources described the arrest as "very significant" and confirmed that it was linked to all seven bombs, which were sent in A5 Jiffy bags, some containing glass and at least one with a Cambridge postmark...

... Jo Lee, a 26-year-old housewife from Arbury, attended both schools with Cooper and said that he rarely spoke. "He was a bit strange to be honest," she said.

"He never took part in any after-school clubs or hung around with anyone. He just seemed to go home and do nothing. He definitely never had any girlfriends."

"He wore big boots and long greasy hair, he looked 'grebby' [like a Goth]. There were no friends that I remember, maybe three or four, but he never really spoke much."

I hope so, that would seriously increase my rep on the estate! 8)

I probably lived very near to that guy for a year or so. Be interested in finding out the exact street name. Another cambridge road i lived in, this guy kept trying to derail a nearby trainline, by placing random objects on the tracks - tractor wheels, metal plates. Once he got so pissed off at not derailing the train he went and burnt a barn down instead. He was very quiet and non-communicative as well...

There is a "new" unabomber in the states too. I read an article a couple days ago about it... he sends unarmed bombs in the mail.

The original unabomber had many high functioning autistic traits.

Now that the media has heard the term Asperger's everyone who gets violent "has Asperger's." Well, it ain't so.....unless they are also bi-polar. The unibomber in the U.S., by the way, had some good points. He just chose a pretty sick and ineffective way to express them. There is nothing in any of the literature on violence to suggest that it has anything to do with Asperger's! It's either a good story, and it'll pass, or we're all in a lot of trouble.

Big dilly if he didn't go to after-school clubs...no?

Pointless information to me.

Read that in the Daily Mail (don't sneer!). I'm pretty sure he's an Aspie. Just incase you're wondering he crossed his eyes in that photo for a joke.
