...ties to? Outside of the internet and other places where people are explicitly looking to socialise, i mean.

What i mean is, making friends with somebody, for example, in your class is simple enough (ignoring semantics). However, i don't understand how one would make friends with somebody that one has no social ties to. Are people bound in who they could potentially make friends with by their social commitments?

The key phrase here is "small talk". This is how you would "break the ice" if you don't know someone.

What qualifies as a social tie? Waylaying people in the grocery store to try to befriend them probably wouldn't turn out well, but people do make friends at places like the Renaissance Faire, which isn't really a commitment socially.

By "social ties" i mean stuff like having mutual friends, being in the same class, etc.
