i recently went to a lecture delivered by roger penrose about conjectural conceptions (i.e. pseudo-physics/ paraphilosophy) of what was around previous to the big bang... what do you guys think? do any of you have an obsession with physical cosmology and astrophysics like i do?

You can't really talk about what was there "before"... Space *and* time were created with the big bang. There is no before.

Or before was just the previous instance of this universe. Bang follows collapse.

"In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God."

Before God created the universe there was only God.

Ah, one of my favourite questions. Most physicists prefer the answer 'primordial star', 'singularity' or as I used to call it, G.O.M.E (gravitationally [as in scalar] emitting massive entity).
There was supposedly a point of compact fractals or super-symmetric strings (vibrating nodes) that had not yet taken the form of space and time, nor the entity of manifolds…and therefore the universe as we know it was not established until quantum uncertainly perturbation occurred (otherwise known as spontaneous symmetry breaking).

You are well within your rights to inquire as to what came before, and many individuals become nervous when this question is posed, tending to dismiss it with answers such as ‘there was no before’ or ‘it is impossible to imagine a before’.
Physically this is true; but mathematically, it is not. Try to come up with some ideas yourself... What do YOU think existed ‘before’ the current universe had existed- what do you think the properties this meta-manifold or singularity would have been like?

what was there before the universe existed?

Potential.

I've got a good one...

What was "where" before the universe existed?

I mean personally I like the idea that each black hole which is created spawns an internal "big bang" (i.e. that our universe is a sub-division via singularity-creation of another universe in the multiverse); that the interior of all black holes are island universes, and that within the multiverse there is a Darwinian natural selection process; universes spawned acquire their parent universes characteristics with some scope for mutation. Obviously the universe which produces the most singularities produces the greatest number of offspring. Parent universes would ultimately suffer a heat death, from entropy, which would mean that their black holes would all evaporate via Hawking radiation, which is an interesting scenario I suppose.

Unfortunately, I do realise that being able hypothesise in this sensationalistic, hyperbolic way merely reflects science's (and my own personal) ignorance. Oh well, it's good fun.

You were at a lecture by Penrose?.... I'm jealous...

Anyway, according to our laws there was of course no 'before' the big-bang. Reality is not maths however. There WAS a before and my opinion is that the universe goes through cycles of 'banging' and 'collapsing' (ignore the sexual innuendo!). I cannot think of any other possibility other than that but am very open to other ideas.

Possibly before it was 'singularity', it was the universe that was collapsing under it's own gravity.

Or God was wondering what to do :D

After singularity (1) comes duality (2). What comes before singularity? (0)

In the beginning, there was Nothing. Then Nothing contracted until there was Something that was not Itself.

Nothing is perfect.

Nothing lasts forever.

I think before the universe exsisted, there were floating binary number everywhere.

like 01100011011100100110000101110000. and who can
forget 0111000001110101011000100110010101110011.

There was either nothing, or all the stuff that had yet to appear was elsewhere, like in a parallel universe or another dimension, before popping into existence in our universe.

Maybe a previous universe.
