I am really not a "musical" person, never been a "fan" of anything not having any kind of proper musical education (due to my own laziness and comprehensive lack of discipline and motivation). So I'm doubtful of my judgment having any merit. So what are anyone's thoughts on the Smiths? I find them easy to get into, and some of their songs are rather nice tunes. But I find the lyrics troubling- I sense a lot of hollow post-adolescent delusions of grandeur (maybe I'm projecting haha), but Morrissey's self-pity really gets to me (e.g. in There's a Light that Never goes out). I know I should separate the art from the artist, but what I get from Morrissey in his media appearances, is that he's probably a very self-absorbed and narcissistic person (though not as crudely and vulgarly as say, the Gallagher brothers- their public statements provoke quite some anger in me I have to say). Then again, narcissism and even a slight sociopathic edge - a vulgar-Nietzschean sense of superiority - seems to be common among the "talented" and "brilliant". So while I sometimes listen to the odd Smiths song, I always feel a certain sense of apprehension. I like some of their songs, but ultimately I can't identify with the music. Sorry, this post may come off rather self-centered itself. Feel free to argue, especially the Smiths fans out here of course!
