Does anyone know of any movies (not documentaries) or tv shows about Asperger's Syndrome or Autism? Or even ones that just include a character on the spectrum? The only thing I know of is Mozart and the Whale. (And The Big Bang Theory and Bones, if those really count.)

The only one I'm aware of (Other than The Big Bang Theory) is a show called "The Bridge" starring Diane Kruger as an Aspie detective. It's the show that Wrong Planet's Alex Plank was a consultant on.

It's actually a pretty good show, I enjoyed the episodes I watched but just couldn't make time for it with my other shows.

possibly the episode Ass Burgers of South Park

quite likely Pi

I love that movie. Makes me proud to be mad and perhaps wish I were even madder.

Hikari to Tomoni (With the Light, Raising an Autistic Child). It was originally a manga series (which I highly recommend), and was adapted into 11 episodes for TV. As of now, they should be on Youtube. The episodes are entirely in Japanese, but they have English subtitles as well.

wow that one is tough. I started watching it based on your suggestion and can hardly handle it. Everyone is "blaming" the mother for the autistic son and pressuring her saying things like he is like that because she isn't a good mom. This is so sad :cry:
I know in many cultures it is like that but still makes me feel very sad. Poor mom, poor kid. Everyone is opressing them even the cab driver and the strangers on the streets!

Watamote (anime) - not AS but the social anxiety issues are 100% perfectly illustrated.

Doc. Martin - British tv series...

Yeah, I was gonna recommend "Doc Martin"----I LIVE for this show!! !! (PBS) I live in Baltimore, Maryland, and it comes-on on Thursday night at 9pm-----and then it plays all-through the night. They play back-to-back episodes (about 45-50 minutes each). I watch it from 9 to 10:35pm, and then I get-up at 4:30am (Friday morning), and watch the same two episodes, again. Can you say "Obsessed"?

Doctor Martin Ellingham used to be a VERY well-respected surgeon in London until he got hemophobia (fear of blood----can you imagine? LOL) Anyway, because of this, he had to give-up his job as a surgeon. He was then relocated to a small seaside village (the scenery is UNBELIEVABLE----GORGEOUS----a character, itself, in the show), where he became the "government physician". Being an Aspie, the people, all, drive him to near madness----he's only interested in science (medicine). He's an EXTRAORDINARY doctor. He uses a vodka bottle like an IV, he merely looks in someone's eyes and knows what's wrong with them, he performs an operation in the ambulance, on the way to a hospital----even though he has to stop and puke, because of the blood. Also, he has to make alot of house-calls.

Here's some dialogue:

(Patient is once again being over-dramatic and calling the doctor on the phone, to come to his house.)
Patient: "Doc, I think I'm dyin'!"
Doc Martin: "You'd better be!"

(A young girl severs her finger.)
Her friends: "Doc, is she gonna die?"
Doc Martin: "YES----but not today".

(A woman is concerned about her hyperactive child.)
Woman: "Doc, what's wrong with my little girl?"
Doc Martin: "She's VERY annoying."

Oh, I forgot to tell you that the diagnoses are a character in the show, as well, IMO. They include: Asperger's, ADHD, Depression, S&M, Diabetes, a guy who's best friend is a giant squirrel, a guy who eats his hair and throws-up a hair ball, a guy (the police chief, LOL) has agoraphobia, a guy has narcolepsy (sp?), a woman who gets some kind of rash----and the only other 2 people in the town who have it are her husband, and her lover (whoops, LOL).

Then, there's the personal story: Doc Martin falls in love with the school headmistress. In the beginning, she's "somewhat" tolerant of his Asperger's; then, not-so-much. He has an old aunt that runs an organic farm----he walks-in her house one day and she's being boinked by the handy-man on her kitchen table. Then there's his mother and father. Since Martin is now "only a doctor", and not a surgeon like his father, his father thinks he's "less than". His mother told him that she and his father were in-love, and had a WONDERFUL life, before Doc Martin came along, and he ruined EVERYTHING.

Oh, I know I've been long-winded about this----but, I just can't remember when a TV show has ever touched me like this.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Also, there's "Monk"-----NOT an Aspie-----but, has MAJOR OCD, and has been kicked-off the police force because of it. He now confers with them on the side, for a living. You can only see it in re-runs, now, on some stations. It's EXCELLENT!!
The movies Snow Cake and Mercury Rising both have an autistic character.
A Serious Man has a subplot concerning the lead character's brother who either has Asperger's, or some form of high functioning autism.
In the movie Drive the main character certainly seems to be an Aspie.
I just watched My Name Is Khan, which was great and, in light of recent events, quite prescient from an AS standpoint rather than the Muslim one highlighted in the film.
He's not technically a main character, but Ray Romano/Hank the photographer comes to the gradual realization that he could have AS also.
They show a few scenes of him meeting with the psychiatrist/counselor who Max had seen, and Hank tries to comprehend his own interpersonal difficulties.
As an adult who wasn't dx'd until age 30, it is easier for me (now) to relate to Hank's story than just to the teen challenges Max faces...
And I also highly recommend Doc Martin, I love that show-everyone in it is quirky or atypical in some way or other, and Martin Clunes does a marvelous job as the main character.
He doesn't really accept the label of having Asperger's (as is often the case in a fictional program), but we the audience can pretty clearly observe his behavior & draw our own conclusions.
