Just wondered..

Does anyone else here dislike going to the cinema (movies) cos they find it overwhelming?

I don't have any recollection of feeling like this as a child but more recently, after going to see a film I tend to get a headache afterwards (I think because my eyes dislike the fact that I'm sitting in the darkness for two or three hours. Plus the fact that every time there's a sound effect or music I tend to feel as if I'm being bludgeoned over the head)

Yes, I often get panic attacks when in the cinema now...the ultimate irony was when I had one during Jodie Foster's 'Panic Room'. That was terrible. I cannot cope with the loud sounds etc though I sometimes manage if I can really lose myself in the film...such as with Harry Potter.

Yeah, I totally identify with that. I can do Harry Potter although I usually lose myself in it so much I have tears rolling down my face during the opening music!
I really dread my friends suggesting that we go as I'm running out of excuses. There is only a certain number of times you can say that you don't really like films before your friends start thinking you're a miserable person..

Yeah I had trouble until quite recently going to the cinema specifically because of the loud sounds. I do tend to enjoy it a lot more these days, maybe just because I'm older.

I will only go to the earliest matinee because it isn't crowded. A long time ago I realized that if I went to popular movies when they opened and there was a crowd, I would go into overload and pass out.

I also notice that it always sounds too loud. Painful even. I don't know why they make the sound so loud.

I get panic attacks if it's crowded.
I can handle the early shows because it's usually empty.
They also have special screenings intended for Moms with young kids where they turn down the volume and leave a couple of the lights on so you can get to the exit easier. In the last 5 years I've only gone to the 'Mommy' screenings.... but they are increasingly getting more popular. :(

I'm ok in the cinema
(apart from when first going in and trying to find a seat, too many people usually all facing you, lots to think about, lots to drop :? )

I'm a zombie when I am at the movie theatre.

nope, i like going out to the cinema. well, actually it depends on the audience. it ruins the movie if there's some a**hole who's decided that he's going to talk to the person next to him during the whole movie and don't even get me started on small children...

I love going to the movies, but maybe that's because I usually go in the morning with my family when there's less people. I do start feeling really uncomfortable when a stranger sits next to me. I don't like having my space invaded.

I used to be sensitive to the loud sounds too. Especially when I went to see the movie "Twister" in the big theater. It sounded like the tornado was inside the building and I was plugging my ears the whole time. Now it doesn't bother me so much. Sometimes I do get a little nervous when I'm in the IMAX theater, but it's usually an enjoyable experience.

That's funny, I was an IMAX projectionist for a few years. I loved the movies but almost never got to sit in the auditorium during a show.

I have no problem, so long as there's at least one seat between me and anyone else (Preferably more than one).

I love going to the theatre, we've got a small one just down the road from my place (conveniently located across the road from my favourite dairy. It's nice and small, can only hold about 15-20 people at a time.

The one I used to go to could hold 100 or more, and one time when I went there as a class treat, me and my mates were the ONLY ones in our theater. I tell ya, it was awesome!
