This seems to be one of the current controversial things in the gaming community. The thing is, I don't think I've ever met a "fake nerd girl" in my life. Most of the geeky girls I've met seem to be the real deal. But then again, I'm practically a hermit, so I'm probably not at the liberty to discuss whether they actually exist or not. The only people that seem to come close to fitting that description are booth babes, but they're paid to be fake, so I guess it doesn't really count.

So, have any of you ever met a true blue "fake nerd girl"? Are they as prevalent as the Internet would lead you to believe? Not trying to stir the pot or anything, just trying to make some sense of this issue that seems sort of weird to me. :?

I could be considered a fake nerd girl by some people. I don't know whether to identify as a nerd girl or not because I'm kind of borderline. If I say I'm a nerd girl I could be considered fake but if I say I'm not it could be a lie. I play magic the gathering and I enjoy video games but I don't play tabletop rpgs, I'm not deep into anime or manga, I don't play games at a high competitive level, and I haven't been doing much retro exploration until recently. I also didn't go to university or study computers. I'm terrible with computers. I can't even remember from high school how to use html.

Do I call myself a nerd girl just because I enjoy a few things that are considered nerd hobbies? Or do I not call myself a nerd because there are a lot of things I don't share with the nerds I know? I'm going to a video game convention this weekend with friends of mine who fit the definition of nerd better than I do.

I have never met one.
They seem to be girls that can't answer every trivia question they are bombarded with.
Lol the internet is a weird place.

I'm not in that scene, but why would any non-nerd girl fake being ''nerd'' to get such abuse and accusations hurled at her? It doesn't seem like the most appealing thing to me.

Is it possible that the term "nerd" has changed definitions over the generations?

What the heck is a "nerd" to you? Maybe I am fake?

Is a "fake nerd girl" a female with a couple nerd-hobbies that doesn't look-the-part? Usually when someone gets called a nerd by others it's because they "look the part"(i.e. ugly) combined with stereotypical nerd-interests.

When I was growing up, a "nerd" was someone who was really smart and a bit bookish. A "geek" was someone into computers/video games/technology and the like. Someone could be a "nerd" without being a "geek", and vice verse. Some people were both, and they were "geeky nerds."

I am not at all into technology, so if that is part of the current definition of "nerd", I am totally a fake.

However, I think in general it is more likely that a girl pretend NOT to be a nerd or a geek even if she secretly is.

A nerd was a nerd even in the 1950's (or before). "Nerds" were also known as "eggheads." When I was called an egghead, I took that as a compliment.

In retrospect, I wonder how this country would have fared had Adlai Stevenson (known as an egghead) would have been elected president in 1952.

No knock on Eisenhower--he was a pretty great guy, actually.

What is a fake nerd girl? Either you are a nerd or you are not? What is the criteria to be a nerd girl?

I think that's mainly a myth caused by gender stereotypes and the weird insular nature of the nerd community. There are "posers" for everything I'm sure but the nerd community isn't even supposed to be "cool" or anything so people would be less likely to do that for nerdiness.

I think there are different kinds of nerds, some are into computers and videogames, some are into science, some are into books and some are into films, tv shows or music (like myself) and if you're fake you pretend to know a lot about these things but you don't! I think I've met one or two posers yep

I see a geek as more into the technical aspects of things; whereas nerds are more into the philosophical aspects of things, in complement with the technical.

According to this, aspies are not likelly to be geeks. http://majorspoilers.com/2012/01/05/infographic-geek-vs-nerd/

And according to this, autists are considered nerds. https://slackprop.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/plot-hires.pdf

Seem from both those sources that geeks are cools but frequently superficials. Better to be a nerd. 8)

Nerdiness can be a very relative and subjective thing. A person just starting to get into "nerdy stuff" can be virtually indistinguishable from a "poser nerd".

geek can be anyone who has a extreme interest in a hobby.

there are gun geeks, car geeks, tool geeks, etc.

nerd seems to be more book like and computer IT .

people who play video games use to be geeks, but now they are called gamers. which carries the same bad name as geek, but now being a geek in stuff is considered coolish.

I think what most people refer to as a "fake" nerd girl is one who pretends to be interested in nerdy pursuits when in reality, she cares as much for them as the "average" girl. This could be for various reasons, one being to appear more desirable to certain guys (since there are many who covet a "gamer" or "nerdy" girl), appearing more intelligent, or just for the sake of being "different."
