My 7 yr old told me tonight that he is scared going into stores. He said that the lights sound like they are going to break and fall. He is out of control when we go into stores and I never thought it could be that. I was wondering what I can do to help him. Any comment would be helpful.

Thanks

I don't hear them in stores but in smaller rooms, like offices. We're talking flourescent lights?
They flicker too, sometimes even bugging the NTs.

I agree with everything Tiny said....I hate sitting under the lights when they buzz...which is pretty much constantly. I love it when you have cool teachers who let you turn off the lights; they definitely make my day.

yes, I hear the lights, too. And the light from tem is so annoying; I am so relieved I am noty the only one they bother. And I also hear the CRT's of monitors and TVs. I used to work by myself in the receiving room of Books-A-Million, and the far end of it doubled as breakroom and training room. In the corner, they had one of those TV/VCR combos and would play training videos on it. I could always tell when the did, because I would come back to the room and hear the high-pitched whine of the CRT that had been left on, even though there was no picture and everyone always said they turned it off. Only one other person there could hear it, but I could tell the others without looking if it was off or on. I think they left it on sometimes because they knew it annoyed me.

Yuck, florescent lights. I once had a large one in my apartment, right over the kitchen table. I never used it, preferring a small lamp. It was much cozier and there wasn't that annoying buzz.

both of my aspies hate the lights in stores~they also hate the reverberating sound in those big warehouse stores...beyond the high-pitched sound of the lights, there's the annoying, scratchy intercom to contend with.

Yeah, I hear them too, it gives me a headache. I also can not really see, but more sense the high speed flickering that goes along w/ the buzz, and that really doesn't help.

I hear the long tubular ones...they make a loud, annoying buzzing noise. The other fluorescent lights don't seem to bother me (much). I hate it especially when they flicker- it's almost like a clanging sound combined with the lights going on and off in an irregular fashion.

I especially can't go into Walmart... the noise in that store is unbelievable. The lights, the people and the INTERCOM!! ! Oh why, oh why must they shout into the intercom?

I'd recommend that you stick with smaller stores- ones where the lights don't bother your little one. (That is, if you have to take your child with you when you shop).

What I do now... I get my groceries delivered to me so that I don't have to go shopping.

I hate it when they shout in the intercom! Don't they realize that the volume is already up so that they can speak in a regular tone and still be heard? I think some people actually thrive on loud sounds, and would feel uncomfortable without them.

Can you try earphones and a cap? That might lower the distress, but not get rid of it altogether. It is truly inhuman what stores and offices put us through.

Yes.

Here is a list of things at the grocery that I can not stand:

*lights
*shuffle walkers or people who walk noisily
*loud cell phone people
*crinkly noises in some aisles---like the chip area
*dirty flooring--sticky or slippery
*out of place items or items placed in an illogical area
*beeping at the check out counter
*chimes at the door
*smelling the random people who are there
*squeaky shopping carts
*shopping carts with defective wheels
*when other people stop me to ask me a question---like I care!
*muzak
*when the tasters are cooking something fishy (which always smells unpleasant)

I really could go on forever. I hate grocery shopping!

Oh yeah.

I NEARLY forgot this one:

Our local Supercenter is having air conditioning troubles---for the past 5 years.

So, when the air turns on, the noise is unbearable. Grinding, warbling, and chuffing.

The noise of it absolutely consumes my thoughts and I usually leave without completing my shopping.

yeah, some lights / fixtures have an irritating high-pitched noise going on with them. Some other electronics do as well. I think I've gotten used to the more "common" sources, I don't notice most of it nowadays unless I'm not paying attention to anything else.

I can definitely hear most fluorescent lights but it usually doesn't bother me. Though if they are malfunctioning I do start to get agitated.
