or does rock music really suck these days with only a few shining exceptions?

And by suck I mean sound like Nickleback, one of the biggest hack bands ever. Listening to them makes me want to take a shower because it reminds me of people living in run-down trailors wearing wife-beaters, and living up to the shirt's name.

Nickleback is what I call "white trash rock."

amirite or amirite?

Hmm my advice would be to ignore mainstream rock (bands such as Nickelback) and look into the underground. There are plenty of quality rock or rock-related bands out there nowadays but they generally won't be heard on the radio (aside from a few decent independent / college / possibly satellite / online stations - a rarity though). Post-rock, experimental, neo-psychedelic rock, stoner rock, various metal sub-genres and such have decent rock or rockish bands among them. There are other underground rock genres too but those are what I'm most familiar with.

Try some of these bands:

- High on Fire
- Agalloch
- Tool
- Ghost
- Acid Mothers Temple
- Blind Guardian
- Om
- Enslaved
- The Melvins
- Jesu

I was also referring to your list of lame emo bands. This whole deal with using low production quality as stylistic... absolutely ridiculous.

I listen to a lot of Industrial. Front Line Assembly, VNV Nation, Assemblage 23, Front 242, Covenant... modern rock does nothing for me.

Uh, there's plenty of good rock out there, dude. You just gotta look for it. Try out bands like:

-Queens of the Stone Age (sample)
-Clutch (sample)
-Orange Goblin
-Danava
-Kyuss (sample)
-Corrosion of Conformity (sample)
-Desert Sessions
-Fu Manchu
-Unida (sample)
-Hermano
-Mondo Generator (sample)
-Gonga (sample)

Please take the time to listen to a few samples I have there. Those are all great rock bands, I assure you. There's no corporate post-production crap, no "fad of the week" garbage, no mtv bullsh*t, just a bunch of talented rockers making balls-to-the-wall music without caring about how popular or rich they get. There's still plenty of hope for rock, you just have to dig a little deeper than your TV or radio.

Excellent list! I was going to mention Kyuss too but I assumed the op was looking at currently active bands. Kyuss is definitely one of the best things to happen in rock in recent years. I just wish they had stayed together but at least the members are still playing in other bands and their legacy carries on in those they influenced.

You included one of my favorite bands on the list: Clutch. So for that I give you mad props, dude. Mad Props indeed.

In case you're wondering, the new Clutch CD is awesome. It isn't out yet but it leaked over BitTorrent and I have it. It's much more bluesy than previous albums but it's in no way disappointing. Better than Robot Hive/Exodus, IMO.

Emo is hating the world.
The White Stripes are mostly sappy love songs with good guitar riffs.
I'd consider them more of a Yeah-Yeah-Yeahs wannabe, if anything.
In positive terms, of course.
