Hello I'm new, my therapist advised me to come here because she thinks I have Aspergers and is sending me to a psychiatrist for assessment. I think she wanted me to talk to other people with this condition in order to learn more about it and myself.

I have looked through the site and found it very helpful and it served as a very good insight in to myself. I hadn't really anticipated my own level of misunderstanding of my own feelings. Does anyone else have this issue? I literally cannot explain how I feel unless I'm angry, irritated or sad. I'm thirty now and have been previously misdiagnosed with Bipolar disorder. Has anyone else been through anything similar? It'd be good to hear back from anyone with information/advice as I must admit I'm finding the whole process a little overwhelming.

Hi and welcome!
I was misdiagnosed as a child mainly because at that time the USA did not recognize Aspergers as a diagnosis. I only found out about it in my late thirties when a therapist suggested I probably have it. When I first sought a diagnosis as an adult, one of the doctors I went to tried to talk me out of it saying what's the point since there is no cure. But I want to know the truth, and knowing is half the battle! Also, if it is in my medical records and they do find some type of treatment or therapy for some of my more unpleasant symptoms (especially the sensory overload), that would be cool. Having an official diagnosis can also be required to get assistance from some agencies especially if one is very low or no income, and to get accommodations made at college for test taking and such.

Whether or not you have Aspergers this is one of the cooler places on the internet. Again, welcome!

Hi Emma!
It took a while for me to be diagnosed also. I think it is also a problem being female because Autism is traditionally seen as a male disorder. Which I find quite frustrating, though the book 'Aspergirls' was very insightful. I would recommend reading more into it, because you really can learn a lot about yourself this way.
I hope you find this site helpful- I know I do :)
