I never enjoy the Beatles music. It never once evokes anything from me. No connection to it. Its very manipulative at times. They had zero stage presence, and were really more of a studio creation.

The Monkees were much better. Vocally, and everything else! And also, they were real musicians who happened to also be Actors who played their own instruments on their later albums. I think they are just better. I don't compare the Beetles vs Elvis because he was in a class all by himself. But the Monkees were more relevant in that genre, so I think they were better! I enjoy their music far more than anything the Beeetles ever did.

The Monkees were formed by TV producers to cash in on the popularity of The Beatles. They didn't write their own music and mostly other musicians played their instruments for them on their recordings. You should be crediting your love for the Monkees to the actual artists/musicians who wrote the music for the Monkees, namely people such as Neil Diamond and Carol King. If you ever bothered to read about The Beatles, you would have discovered that they played together as young teenagers, long before they ever entered a studio (actually the opposite situation to the Monkees).

My two favourite band are The Kinks and The Beatles. The more I see threads like these, the more I want to listen to The Beatles.

Their movie "Head" is amusing.

Any love for The Small Faces? They were around about the same time as The Kinks.

But The Monkees didn't write their own songs or play their own instruments! At least that's what was said on The Simpsons. :)

I never really intended to listen to the Beatles, I was never a big fan. But I ended up with a load of their albums about 11 years ago and through the odd track coming on over the years I've slowly absorbed them and I have to say that there are some real nice songs they've created. Definitely better than the monkeys and that's from someone that's not really invested in any kind of way. Maybe you just need to find those truly exceptional tracks that you only find through actually listening to their albums.

No, I am not. I assure you I am serious. I really do not enjoy The Beatles. They do nothing for me. None of their songs resonate with me, nor their performances. I really can only tolerate them in moderation. Most overrated band in history in music. However, LOVE the Monkees!

Yes, the Monkees were eventually allowed to play and write their own music. But it certainly didn't measure up to their earlier stuff.

I think it's great if you prefer the Monkees songs to the Beatles -- musical appreciation is subjective -- but it's impossible to back up the statement that they were "better than the Beatles."

The Beatles worked hard to achieve their fame from the late '50s to the the early '60s. They honed their craft in tough venues like the Star Club in Hamburg, and The Cavern in Liverpool. They revolutionized pop music in a way that has never been seen since. They continually pushed the envelope to create more innovative music with very new release. Compare 1963's "Please Please Me" to 1967's "Sgt. Pepper." It's just an astounding evolution!

The Monkees were created in the Beatles' image for television. I rest my case.

Mike Nesmith's Psych Country albums are really good, too.

The song starts 17 seconds in.

Michael Nesmith is a legitimate song writer, even if he didn't write most of The Monkees tunes.

That being said, a lot of bands were/are better than the Beatles. The Monkees aren't one of them.

Their psychedelic stuff and the film Head holds its own with anything else that was going on the Psychedelic era.

Even with the pre written pop songs it took talent to get it across in an era with no computer help.

The Monkees were all right. Nice, pleasant pop music.

The Beatles were, at times, great. They had great producers who implemented their ideas.

It's like comparing a Julie mango with an overripe banana.
