Hi folks,

I've been thinking about Jimi Hendrix a little bit.

How do you folks feel about him?

I happen to think he was deceptively soft-spoken, despite his fame. He was a fascinating character. Some people believe he had some Aspergian traits.

I remember when he died.

I found out about it through a poster at Woolworth's. I was nine years old.

A feeling of profound sadness (for a nine year old) came over me.

His music is in a class/league/universe of its own. I feel a great sense of sadness now when I think of what was lost. Axis Bold as Love Are you experienced Electric Ladyland. Three albums which dont seemto belong to this cosmos even

So many great electric guitarists in the world today, but few come even close to his genius. Sad that the music of Jimi Hendrix was exploited for profit after his death.

Brilliant musician, fascinating character as you say. I only "discovered" him in 1988, but over the following two years listened to hardly any other stuff but his.

Check out the 10 seconds or so of guitar solo he plays on the neck of the guitar with his right hand (while holding his left arm in the air), during "Wild Thing" at the Monterey Pop Festival, 1967. I'm pretty sure I haven't heard (or seen) anything quite as amazing as that from any artiste.

Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Foxy Lady, Rolling Stone, Power To Love and, of course, Wild Thing were usually his best live performances, I'd say, and the studio versions of Voodoo Chile and Burning of the Midnight Lamp were also pretty amazing!

He could strum one tune, and pick another--simultaneously!

surely that would be voice leading i.e incorporating melody notes into the chords and using passing notes. On an e.guitar you can use hammer ons and pull offs too which are notes played on the fretboard without picking/strumming. Thats not really uncommon. It was his use of jazz that got me. The purple haze chord is immortal. Little wing is a stunner too. The textures and the counterpoint...

I found out it's called the "dominant seventh sharp ninth chord." Or the Hendrix Chord.

Hendrix once played the National Anthem and some other song--alternating between strumming and picking.

There's a story about the time he met clapton during the cream years. They were playing in the same club and apparently clapton was horror struck/wonder struck by Hendrixe's playing. Hendrix was actually negotiating with Miles Davis for work on a fusion record too 8O

He is another defining characteristic of American rock and roll. It is the reason why rock and roll will never ever die.

Used to be quite into Hendrix when I first got into electric guitar. Bought the big, thick official tab books, watched the documentaries, bootlegs, read the interviews, got the posthumous CDs like South Saturn Delta and First Rays.. But then I got bored with it after that and moved on. To a brief Metal phase.. Which is quite different :)

Some of Hendrix's music has clearly influenced a lot of metal acts imo. I wouldnt say its different at all. Hendrix just places more focus on the blues. Even something like Meshuggah clearly has Hendrix's imprint
