I was videotaping my nephews today at the park and when I reviewed the video my voice was very monotone. I was shocked how bad it sounded. I was under the false
impression I had a more animated expressive voice. I sound more like Kermit the frog
than the average person. Combine that with my body language and I'm very poorly communicating with people. Oh thats among the reasons why I will not be showing my face or voice on line.

I don't like my voice either. To my ears, anyway, it sounds a bit metallic, robotic.

Yeah, my voice sounds different from what my own ears tell me. I did ask a lot of my friends (like, 8 of them) and they said my voice was quite energetic. :?

The first time I heard my voice recorded on video tape was when I was 18. I also was videotaping a christmas party. The next day, when I played the video for the first time, I was horrified. I couldn't believe that was me and I told my mom, she just said "everybody hates their own voice". I was totally shocked by the video, I thought I was using inflection, etc. It didn't come out like that at all, also, when i saw candid footage of myself I was so embarrased because I thought my facial expression was very strange, I don't even know how to describe it.

I don't speak in a monotonous voice, yet my recorded voice seems somehow...strange, distant, unreal.

My normal voice is very monotone. However I do have a radio announcer type voice that I learned (or mimicked) to do when I used on the air when I was at in my high school AV department. I have a very deep voice and the tone is pleasant. However my radio voice (as I call it) would sound ridiculous in everyday conversations.) When I do hear my everyday voice, I can't stand it. Another problem I have is that when leaving voicemails of people's phones is that my voice is deep and the frequency rand over some phones is very low causing my voice to sound muffled. Yet another reason I prefer E-MAIL to voicemail.

I am monotone too. And I dont like it. Here is something I just came across:

"Speaking in a monotonous voice is a real communication killer. When the variety of your voice’s pitch doesn’t vary, it’s impossible for your listener to maintain any interest in what you’re saying. He tunes out – quickly. Once again, your message falls by the wayside.

But even if he did hear it, he probably wouldn’t believe it. People who speak in a monotone or with inappropriate expression in their voices are perceived as untrustworthy, boring, or even shifty. As a business, sales or professional person, you can see why you’d want to fix this sloppy speech problem right away!"

There are also exercises to try to add more emotion to your voice.

I didn't even know my voice was monotone until my boyfriend told me. No one else has never told me my voice never changes. I used to think a monotone was how Rayman sounds when he talks and that one guy in a CSI episode who was an aspie who killed homeless men for money. But it just means your tone never changes when you're sad or happy, mad etc. Mine only changes when I say curse words and quoting lines or people.

When you listen to other people....are you ever annoyed by their very animated voices?

Everytime I am around "cheerful" people,I often am uncomfortable and feel they are fake sounding. It actually grates on my nerves. Some of my favorite comedians have a "deadpan delivery" and part of a "cool" sounding person is usually someone who seems dispassionate in their delivery.(like they are to cool to be bothered by anything)....So,I dont think it is all bad.

The strange part to me is the sound in my head when I "practice dialogues" seems to have inflections...I am not sure why those inflections dont make it from my brain to my mouth EXCEPT when I am talking about something I am very passionate about(How much I think G Bush is the anti-christ)...then I become so animated without realizing it,that people tell me to calm down.

I can do this naturally, so after being told I force emotion-sounds but it sounds pretty weird, often overly enthusiastic, and when I do talk emotionally I GET emotional and then I speed up and begin to skip words and slur them and stutter, lol. Perhaps monotone is actually the real forced state which I'm just removing for natural incomprehensible passions...

How old are your nephews?

Young enough to read books to them? Reading aloud helps. :)

When I was a kid I loved it when my uncle read Field and Stream to me.
