Hi. I have AS and I have mental conversations with imaginary versions of my friends in my head. Do other Aspies do this? Sometimes I do this when I'm having real conversations with real people also.

It's normal for me, anyway, I've done it for years. It used to really bother me, but I've come to accept that it's not likely something I can change. I always figured the reason was simply because I spent so much time alone.

I usually talk to myself out loud when I do it as well. I do it to prepare for social situations. If I don't prepare for different situations then I have great trouble talking. It is kind of funny when someone walks into the room and you're pacing and having an intellectual sounding conversation with yourself.

I do it all the time. And if I'm alone, I often do so out loud.

Do that all the time.
Especially when i'm going to meet someone and we'll have to chat. My mind just get uncontrolled, creating numerous conversations that could happen.

I often just say my thoughts out loud as if I'm talking to someone else, telling them about something, but it isn't to anyone in particular. I will usually only have conversations with real people in my head if I am preparing to do so in real life, or if I at least want to tell them those things. I have had a few times where I was talking (more like yelling) as if I was having a conversation with someone who made me angry, but they weren't actually there.

Talking to myself is pretty common when I'm alone, to be honest I probably do it more often than not, unless I'm really focusing on something. I will also sometimes quote my favorite lines to myself, usually from funny videos or movies that I like (and watch many times), or even making my own jokes, and then I laugh at them out loud... I'm sure I look pretty ridiculous to others when I'm doing that, judging from their reactions in the past, but I don't really care

Me too, on occasion. I also use quotes from things I've seen/read recently in conversation sometimes. People just think I'm really weird. 8)

Yes. If I don't rehearse in my head, then I freeze up and forget to bring up pertinent things in person.

Hmmm. I was just wondering this the other day. IIRC I came to the conclusion that this habit develops as the result of loneliness. In any case, I definitely do it alot haha

I've done this all my life. I use to lock the bathroom door at my parents house growing up and talk for almost an hour. My family would yell at me to get out but I was so caught up in my imaginary conversations that I couldn't leave the room until I was done. This happened mainly after I got home from school. Now I live alone and do it often. Sometimes I talk to my animals as if they are one of my co-workers.

Exactly! I do it since I was 11. It helped a lot in social situations. : )

What's interesting is that for unknown reason I mostly talk to myself in English instead of my native language. It seems that I can only express myself properly in English and I would sound so unnatural and weird when I speak my native language that people thought I was a foreigner.
