At school I did a "speed reading" course and read about the same speed before and after, which is about how fast as one would read, reading aloud, with fairly good comprehension. Sometimes I have to re-read a sentance or passage.

I am curious about brain processing time of text/language.

Taking normal speech as a benchmark speed, would you say you are a fast, average or slow reader?

I read fast, and often skip words I don't understand.

I do the same but am not a speed reader - I tried to do the mega memory thing from> Troy Trudeau? -whatever, it was on a demtel ad ... anyway it didn't work.. I got bored by the second tape. what a waste of $500.00 ! !!

Problem with skipping words and sometimes lines, and then sometimes parpagraphs - you don't know what your reading.

I read slow one word at a time if I need to understand what I'm reading.

In 4 th grade I remember my reading teacher had a projector that would display a sentence for a very short time frame. I think nobody in the class could follow its speed. :) Oh that was the days(1980 I guess) when corporal punishment was still tolerated. I got wiped for not doing homework by that teacher :(

But I talk very fast (or have in the fast).

If I'm talking to friends on MSN and reading a comic or something, I just skim through it like I do with 8-Bit Theatre. And now, I stopped reading that comic again as I'm always either here or on MSN.

I rip through books at a shocking pace.

I'm finding it varies depending on the material. I start out by scanning the piece, whether a news article or a novel, and then I go back and read it more carefully.

I also find I have better ability depending on how I feel. Right now, I have to read slower in order to absorb what I need to in order to understand the story. I'm reading a Patrick O'Brian novel ("Post Commander"), and though I wouldn't call the writing style ostentatious, he is using archaic English usage peculiar to the Age of Sail, and I find it slow going at times.

But this is how it is with anything I read right now. I used to fly through books when I was young, but I realize I was maybe understanding a third of what I read.

I would say medium to slowish.

I read out loud very quickly, but I'm just average when I'm reading it in my head since I don't have the patience to just sit and read like I used to.

People have told me I sound drunk when I read outloud. It's probably because I have a deep monotonous voice, and I talk slow sometimes.

I often lose my place in class because I am 10 pages ahead.

I gulp down books, sometimes a whole book in a single evening. My attention span is lacking so I sometimes skim rather than read, and may miss out on some things, but not always. Generally I just read very fast.

But if I really liked a book, I will come back to it again and again, usually only to re-read some special places in it that I found particularly moving. Sometimes I end up memorizing whole stretches of text, along with the way it was positioned on the page. :)

I read fast, but I tend to write notes all over everything. I think that is the result of having degrees in English. It's hard for me to read for pleasure now.

I read fast, i think, that or i'm very committed. I dislike reading out loud, as i can not say things as fast as i read them, i end up slowing down when trying to read out loud so much that i sound like i am am speaking to someone i think is dumb, this does not go down well in class.

With no distractions and all, I can usually read a few hundred pages in a couple of hours. I find it pretty fast.

If I read to myself, I read at a fairly average speed but if I read out loud-- I'm slow and I don't understand anything I have read. I focus so much on how to pronounce the words and trying to project my voice that I completely miss out on comprehension.
