I have never been able to see the point of keeping animals purely as pets. Don't get me wrong - I like animals, but I can't see any reason to have them living in my house, unless they're doing something useful like keeping rodents or burglars out.
I've met only one or two people who feel the same way - everybody else just thinks I'm peculiar not to want to have some cat or dog depending on me for shelter and food.
Anybody here agree with me? Or is it just me?

Emotional comfort, pleasure from contact with them, knowing that you are contributing to the preservation of their species, being part of the world, that sort of thing. If you reject those, at least accept the fact that I embrace those values and it is good of me to do so.

You have a friend. If you take care of them, they will love you.

I like having pets because I can take them places, but I absolutely hate cleaning up after them. Once I'm older and married, my husband will clean up after the pets.

My dog is very low-maintenance and very playful.

Its sort of like having a roomate/housemate, but one you like and can relate too... and doesn't complain as much.

I like having animals because they are very loving and many times they are funny. its also easier to understand why animals do things than it is to understand why humans do things usually.

Animals love you without caring what you believe or think.

A Poodle loves you just as much if your right or left wing.

A cat likes your lap whether you approve of the death penalty or not.

It's because no matter what you do to the rest of world the pet is the prefect lover - it doesn't care about what you do to anyone else.

I have a 7-year-old lab/Akita cross, and I consider her to be my best friend.

Grumpy, I understand that sentiment. I personally do like pets but I can see where you are coming from. I have kept many pets, but I enjoy animals from an intellectual basis, not emotional. Therefore I've kept reptiles and fish, but I don't like animals like dogs because they always want to be pet and are obnoxious in this sense. But if animals/wildlife weren't one of my interests, I would not have pets.

I prefer keeping pets for emotional reasons. If anything I have too damn much intellectual life.

Your dog is so pretty!!

On another note:
My dog just died, she was a Shetland Sheepdog. I'm going through dog-withdrawals, as I call them. I would like to adopt a puppy, but I don't have the time right now.

I can't imagine being without a cat. My cat has caused me to laugh when I was feeling down, and she knows when I'm sick or depressed. She keeps rodents and bugs at bay, and she's beautiful to look upon. Sometimes I hate cleaning the litter box, or trips to the vet, but I imagine she hates the vet visits more than I do! :x But on the whole, having a pet keeps me from going over the deep end.

I just got a new Scottish Terrier. It's a beautiful jet black.

Scottish Terriers are more like cats then dogs, they're arrogant, stubborn loners.
