I use it to mean Asperger's. I use ASD to mean what it stands for: autism spectrum disorder. I don't feel that bound by the DSM. Despite it's supposed basis in science, it's pretty arbitrary on a lot of things.

AS has always meant autism spectrum. It's nothing new. Even when I was first diagnosed it was an autism spectrum disorder. My parents just didn't tell me then it was a spectrum and on the autism spectrum. They only said I had Asperger's. I knew nothing about autism then nor heard of it. Now they have just gotten rid of all the labels with different names and are calling it ASD now. Think of how what if someone got rid of all the cat names and made it all "cats" and now all the cat species had the same name. That is why there are arguments and disagreements about getting rid of Asperger's and calling it all ASD and why some ASD people re not happy about it either. I can remember someone on here comparing it to what if we got rid of all the names of colors and called it all colors. It would sure be confusing.

AS is often used on WP as shorthand for Autism Speaks, though most members wish they would change to Autism Speaks Shuts TF Up..

Here's a long list of things with the AS acronym. http://www.acronymfinder.com/AS.html On WP, it's most likely Autism Spectrum, Asperger Syndrome, or Autism Speaks. I suppose anti-social or Angelman Syndrome are possibilities too.

I usually A$ to abbreviate Autism $peaks, as do many others. It's a critique of some of their financial practices. I didn't realize there were so many other things that could be abbreviated AS besides Asperger Syndrome. I guess I should start spelling them out.

I was always taught it meant Asperger Syndrome when I was in college.
So I use it as such.

Me too. I never even realised it was an acronym for autism spectrum. I always say, "I have AS (Asperger syndrome)" and "I have an ASD (autism spectrum disorder)."

I was told by someone who qualifies people to receive assistance from an organization that provides services to people with developmental disabilities, that Aspiergers is a personality type & not a form of autism so some people with autism have Aspergers but not all people with Aspergers are autistic.

This upsets me. It's as if that someone is downplaying the significance or impact that Aspergers Syndrome can have for those with the condition. Aspergers is more than a shy, eccentric, or rude personality.

Aspergers is a mild form of autism and by mild that isn't to say it can be dismissed as a mere personality trait.

I'm rather repulsed that the person mentioned above holds the position they do. Someone that uneducated on the nature of ASD should not be given authority to render a decision on providing or denying assistance to such a person.

AS is generally shorthand for Asperger Syndrome. Although it's no a separate diagnosis in the DSM, we can still use it on here if you've been diagnosed with it before the change under the terms in the DSM IV or possible interchangeably with HFA now, since there's little difference and it's considered being the same as that under the new diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder in the DSM V.
