Now I don't have aspergers but I do have ADHD which is considered to be in the Autism spectrum. I am doing my junior year research paper on Autism and am wondering if any of you might be able to help me.

thanks!

I do not recall hearing that before. Where did you hear/read this?

I am not diagnosed with AS, but I think I may have it, and I've done a lot of reading on the subject. What do you need help with?

I have previously heard it from two of my doctors. (one being a psychologist and the other a pediatrician) as well as on numerous sites and books I have read. I developed an interest in Autism and AS when my next door neighbors son was diagnosed with AS. We always knew there was something a little different about him. When he was 5 he became interested in the Aztec indians and their rituals and usually such complex interests dont develop until later. He is also an amazing cello player.

As far as help is concerned, anything you feel comfortable sharing with me would be awesome! Personal experiences and such as well as any information you have on it. My e-mail is [email protected] if you would like to e-mail me and when my paper is done I will be glad to show it to you as well as anyone else who wants to see it. If you want to that is. So thank you very much and I hope to hear back from you soon!

Actually ADD and ADHD are neurological disorders. I have had ADHD for all my life thank you so I dont consider it a symptom of anything. I do not have OCD, Touretts or AS. I do however and have been fully diagnosed with ADHD. ADHD otherwise known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, (note the DISORDER part) is not a symptom of anything and it is just as lifelong as Autism. Now I did not intend this post to in any way be disrespectful. I apologize if I have offended anyone. If you would like I can explain the reasoning behind ADHD being part of the Autism spectrum and would also like to get a few opinions on something.

Thank you
Alie

Alie,

I meant no disrespect and there
is no need for you to appologize.
It is rare to catch me off guard,
but in your case you did.

I love to learning new facts. I have
lived under the myth that ADHD was
a symptom, and I suspect others
may feel the same about the suprise
to hear ADHD is AUTISM SPECTRUMED?

I would be curious to hear more on this
shocking revelation.

Most surprised,
Ghosthunter

Some people say that dyslexia (and it associated ones like Dypraxia, dyscalculia) are on the spectrum. It Kind of makes sense as they all seem to share a few things;

Visual thought process
The eye thing (coloured overlays etc)
Poor hand eye coordination
Very good spatial reasoning skills
The way how some people believe that some fish extract can help ADHD and Dyslexia and AS / HFA / LFA
Ect.

So when there is a career like architecture where good spatial reasoning skills and a visual thought process help there are loads of people with ADHD ASD / Dyslexia. On my course (architecture) of the 96 in my year there are 16 Dyslexics, 3 dyspraxics, 4 ADDers and 3 Aspies. There are probably more as every one is very open about Dyslexia but not many non Aspies have heard of AS so people don’t seem to talk about it. Some people like me have two or more of the above and have been counted twice.

I think the thing is that Aspies / HFA would not want to be associated with dyslexia because it a specific learning disability. And dyslexics would not want to be associated with Aspies / HFA because they see them as social disabilities. So no one talks about it. The same goes with ADHD.

Personal I think I agree with this site:

http://www.whatreallyworks.co.uk/start/kidszone.asp?article_ID=441

It would make sense if they shared the same cause but manifested them selves in different ways. But I have no interest in being cured of either.

However I could have just been reading a load of rubbish

The reason I am having difficulty with
this ADHD thing is that I AM NOT
SURE? Usually I have alot to say,
but "if it smells like a cat, walks like a cat,
is it a cat? If you pet it and watch it's
behavior, then you may know"
but otherwise, Hmmm?

Hmmm?

dyslexia is indeed on the spectrum. I myself was suprised to find it there.

The spectrum goes something as follows

Extreme left: Schizophrenia
General left: General Population and most teachers
Right: ADD, dyslexia
Extreme right: Autism

Right and left obviously meaning brain use sides. Obviously Schizophrenia is on the extreme left. I am also interested in hearing anyones opinion on something,

please let me know what you think of this,
"Autism, AS, and ADD/ADHD are caused by mercury in vaccines given as a small child."

personally I don't believe it. It has basically been ruled out as a cause for Autism ect.... but many parents are still holding on to the smallest possibility that Mercury is the cause. I however would love to hear your input.

Thanks again,

Alie[/i]

Alie,

I think we might be talking about different spectrums.

Would it be correct to say your spectrum is the human spectrum and all belong on it somewhere? If not, who would be off?

The spectrum I think about as I'm on this board is the Autism spectrum or PDD spectrum. I have only heard of one doctor who viewed AHDA as on that spectrum and he was considered...unique....by mainstream medical professionals.

Please excuse me but I don't think I truly understand what you mean.

Explain

I don't know about the mercury thing. Yes, I've seen the studies that show its not a cause of ASD but yet I wonder.

I've never before heard of a mercury and ADHD connection. I know many people are excited about the newer studies about Omega-3 and ADHD. My older child has started taking Omega-3 and vitamin E. We'll see what happens.
