A music act is lucky to have one signature song that goes beyond the original subject matter to become anthems. She had 2. I think Autistics can relate to "It's My Party" and "You Don't Own Me". "You Don't Own Me" is more relevant than ever in our current "Fifty Shades of Grey" era

She publicly came out in 2004 but never tried to hide it so most in the industry were aware. The late Dusty Springfield came out around 1970, very early.

RIP to a wonderful singer. My fave song by her was "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows" and when it got used in an ep of The Simpsons.

...Reading that it was that long until she was OFFICALLY publically out made me think of ~ " what , did she inspire Jim Nabors " ? (who , like , 1&3/4 years ago or so announced officially HIS gayness after umpteen years of it being widely seen/thought)

I knew many of her songs, but had never known she was the artist behind them. I also had no idea she had been one of the actresses who played Cat Woman! RIP.

Off Topic: when we were in 5th grade 1968 and "Gomer Pyle" was a hit TV show everybody just kind of knew Jim Nabors and Rock Hudson were "married" decades before it was public they were gay and "coming out" was not even a concept. How did we "know" that?

If you are into that sound, check out the Shangri Las. Tough Queens,NY sound inspired punks a decade later and Amy Winehouse. They just never get enough recognition."I Can Never Go Home Anymore" should be on any top ten all time Rock and Roll songs list

I didn't observe that until the 7th grade in my neck of the woods. I guess we were backwoods hicks in comparison to the big city or affluent suburb types.

Actually, Nabors and Hudson were never married, and in fact barely knew each other. That was just a rumor that had got started, and managed to stick because they were known by and large to be gay.
