Do I really need to please the so-called "fashion police" by following the rules they informally enforce, like how you can't wear white clothes after Labor Day (in the U.S.)?

If they have fashion rules in this world I am sure I am breaking them. I am one of the worlds most uncool person at least according to my sisters.

That "don't wear white after Labour Day" rule is just stupid IMO. What does it matter if you wear white after a certain date? I say, wear what you want and forget the "rules".

Huh, never heard of that one....perhaps next time Labor Day comes around that will be a good day to wear one of my white band t-shirts of The Doors. Aside from that I wear whatever I want if I eventually get off of SSI and am able to work then I don't mind wearing specific clothes for work but aside from that I really don't have much reason to follow any fashion rules.

I think the "No white after Labor Day" is primarily a rule of thumb for women's clothing, the idea being that light, pale colors are "summery" and fall and winter are more appropriate for a darker, more subdued color palette. Other than shirts and socks, not much men's dress clothing is even made in white. During the 1970s, when Leisure Suits and Disco music were big fads, men often wore pastel colored suits with white belts and shoes, but it looked ridiculous even then.

I don't think the "no white" rule applies to band or other topical t-shirts.

"Nothing White After Labor Day" seems to have some origin in the U.S. Navy tradition of putting everyone in "Summer Whites" in Spring, and then back to the "Cracker Jack" uniform in the Autumn.

Anyway ... I set my own style, although it is shared by many middle-aged white males - shorts, sandals, and an "Aloha" shirt in warm weather, blue jeans, boots, and a polo shirt in cooler weather.

Fashion Rule #1: Dress for comfort.
