That's one of my favourite songs. I always thought it was just a hypothetical portrayal of what the world would be like without music. But it's interesting to think that the lyrics could actually connect to historical events.

Its always been though that "the day the music died" referred to in the lyrics was in fact the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Vallens & The Big Bopper. I've read many interesting interpretations of the lyrics, line by line, but the best answer to the meaning of the lyrics was given by Don Maclean himself "What it means is that I never have to work again" 8) Saw him in concert once, my mom used to listen to the album on tape cassette over and over in her car, and IMHO he had a lot of songs that are just as good - especially Vincent - but none as outright catch or, of course, as popular or as enduring.

Always hated that song, along with Freebird. Never understood the point. But it sells for $1.2 mil, so it must have some value I'm unaware of.

At the time it was not uncommon for people to discuss the meaning(s) of lyrics. In the case of "American Pie" it was referencing major events that had occurred in the previous 15 years.
